Չիայի սերմերի գոյության մասին հայտնի է դեռևս հնագույն ժամանակներից, որոնք օգտագործվում էին կրոնական ու ծիսական տարբեր առիթներով, ինչպես նաև հիվանդությունների բուժման համար։
Առողջության համար չիայի սերմերի օգտակարությունը չափազանց մեծ է, որոնք պարունակում են դիետիկ մանրաթելեր, օմեգա 3 ճարպային թթուներ ու սպիտակուցներ։
