Մասնագետները բազմիցս ապացուցել են, որ ծխելը վնասակար է առողջությանը: Այնուամենայնիվ, շատ մարդկանց համար ծխելը թողնելը բերում է շատ լուրջ հոգեբանական խնդիրների, կամ շատերը նույնիսկ հիասթափվւոմ են կյանքից և ոչ մի մոտիվացիա չեն գտնում:

Հիվանդությունների ստուգման և կանխարգելման կենտրոնի մասնագետները աշխատել են այդ ծրագրի վրա և ուսումնասիրել են այն փոփոխությունները, որ տեղի են ունենում մարդու օրգանիզմում ծխելը թողնելուց հետո:
Անհավատալի է, բայց նույնիսկ վերջին ծխախոտը ծխելուց 20 րոպե հետո մի շարք դրական փոփոխություններ են տեղի ունենում, որոնք կարող են տարիներով մնալ:

1-ից 9 ամիս
Ծխելուց առաջացած հազը և ծանր շնչառությունը ոչ միանգամից, այլ աստիճանաբար են վերանում, քանի որ թոքերին ժամանակ է պետք՝ իրեննց մեջ հավաքված վնասակար նյութերից ազատվելու համար:
1 տարի
Ծխելու ցանկությունը վերանում է: Մաշկը առողջ գույն է ստանում և ավելի ճկուն է դառնում: Սրտի իշեմիկ հիվանդություն ձեռք բերելու ռիսկը նվազում է 50%-ով:
5 տարի
Արյան շրջանառությունը ամբողջովին վերականգնվում է: Կաթված ստանալու ռիսկը նվազում է և հավասարվում չծխողների մակարդակին: Նյարդային և իմունային համակարգերը մի քանի անգամ ավելի լավ են գործում:
10 տարի
Թոքերի քաղցկեղ ունենալու ռիսկերը կրկնակի նվազում են: Նվազում են նաև բերանի խոռոչի, կոկորդի, կերակրափողի, երիկամների և պանկրեատիկ քաղցկեղներ ձեռք բերելու ռիսկերը:
15 տարի
Իշեմիկ հիվանդություն և քաղցկեղ ձեռք բերելու հավանականությունը կտրուկ նվազում է և հավասարվում չծխողների մակարդակին:
