Հոլիվուդյան ֆիլմերում հաճախ կարելի է տեսնել տեսարաններ, որտեղ տիեզերագնացը միայնակ սավառնում է անվերջ տիեզերքում՝ առանց վերադարձի հնարավորության։ Սակայն իրական պատմությունն այլ է. մինչ օրս մարդկության պատմության ընթացքում ոչ մի մարդու մարմին չի մնացել տիեզերքում։

Տիեզերքում մահ համարվում է այն դեպքը, երբ մարդը մահանում է Կարմանի գծից՝ Երկրի մակերևույթից մոտ 100 կիլոմետր բարձրությունից վեր։ Այդ սահմանմամբ տիեզերքում պաշտոնապես մահացել են ընդամենը երեք մարդ՝ խորհրդային «Սոյուզ-11» առաքելության անձնակազմի անդամներ Գեորգի Դոբրովոլսկին, Վիկտոր Պացաևը և Վլադիսլավ Վոլկովը։

1971 թվականի հունիսի 30-ին «Սոյուզ-11»-ը վերադառնում էր Երկիր՝ «Սալյուտ-1» տիեզերակայանում անցկացրած 23-օրյա առաքելությունից հետո։ Վերադարձի ընթացքում, շուրջ 150 կիլոմետր բարձրության վրա, տիեզերանավի օդափոխման փականը ժամանակից շուտ բացվել է, ինչի հետևանքով խցիկում ճնշումը կտրուկ նվազել է։ Ընդամենը երկու րոպեի ընթացքում անձնակազմը մահացել է հանկարծակի դեկոմպրեսիայի հետևանքով։

Ինչպես հայտնում է Past.am-ը, տիեզերանավը, չնայած ողբերգությանը, շարունակել է գործել բնականոն ռեժիմով, անվտանգ վայրէջք կատարել, իսկ որոնողափրկարարական խումբը երեք տիեզերագնացներին հայտնաբերել է իրենց նստատեղերում։ Դեպքից հետո տիեզերական համազգեստի օգտագործումը դարձավ պարտադիր թռիչքների բոլոր փուլերում։

Մասնագետների տվյալներով՝ եթե մարդն առանց պաշտպանիչ հանդերձանքի հայտնվի բաց տիեզերքում, նա գիտակցությունը կկորցնի մոտ 10-15 վայրկյանում, իսկ մահը վրա կհասնի մոտ երկու րոպե անց՝ թթվածնի բացակայության և ճնշման կորստի հետևանքով։ Չնայած տարածված առասպելներին՝ մարդու մարմինը չի «պայթում», այլ այտուցվում է, իսկ հետագայում, վակուումի պայմաններում, կարող է աստիճանաբար չորանալ և մումիֆիկացվել։

ՆԱՍԱ-ի և մյուս տիեզերական գործակալությունների գործող կանոններով, եթե տիեզերագնացը մահանա ուղեծրում կամ տիեզերք դուրս գալու ընթացքում, նրա մարմինը հնարավորության դեպքում պետք է վերադարձվի տիեզերանավ կամ կայան, ապա տեղափոխվի Երկիր։ Այս սկզբունքը պահպանվել է մինչ օրս, և պատմության ընթացքում որևէ մարդու մարմին երբևէ չի թողնվել տիեզերքում։

Տարիներ շարունակ շրջանառվել են նաև լուրեր, թե ԽՍՀՄ-ը գաղտնի տիեզերագնացների մահեր է թաքցրել։ Սակայն արխիվների ուսումնասիրությունները նման պատմությունները չեն հաստատել։ Փաստագրված միակ դեպքը, երբ մարդիկ մահացել են հենց տիեզերքում, մնում է «Սոյուզ-11»-ի անձնակազմի ողբերգությունը։
