Բուլղարիայում հնագետները հայտնաբերել են դեռահասի լավ պահպանված կմախք, որն ապրել է ավելի քան 6 200 տարի առաջ եւ փրկվել է առյուծի հարձակումից, կմախքի վրա երեւում են վնասվածքները, որոնք ակնհայտորեն պատճառվել են խոշոր գիշատչի կողմից: Հայտնագործությունը նկարագրող հոդվածը հրապարակվել է Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports ամսագրում:

Կմախքի մնացորդները հայտնաբերվել են Ստրումա գետի հովտի հին բնակավայրում, որտեղ հնագետներն ուսումնասիրում էին վաղ բրոնզի դարաշրջանի եւ նեոլիթի ժամանակաշրջանների դամբարանները: Կմախքի վերլուծության ընթացքում գիտնականները նկատել են գանգի եւ մարմնի վերին մասի զգալի վնասվածքներ, որոնք համապատասխանում են խոշոր գիշատչի ուժեղ հարվածին կամ կծելուն: Հատկապես նկատելի են գանգի եւ ձախ ձեռքի խոր հետքերը, որոնք հասցվել են այնպիսի ուժով, որ թողել են հստակ կոտրվածքներ եւ խախտումներ ոսկորների վրա:

Այնուամենայնիվ, դատելով ոսկրի ապաքինման նշաններից, երիտասարդն ապրել է շաբաթներ եւ հնարավոր է՝ ամիսներ միջադեպից հետո, բավական երկար ժամանակ, որպեսզի մարմինը մասամբ վերականգնվեր ծանր վնասվածքներից: Սա նշանակում է, որ նա ինչ-որ կերպ կարողացել է աջակցություն ստանալ իր համայնքից, դիմանալ ցավին եւ շարժունակության սահմանափակմանը, ինչպես նաեւ հարմարվել ծանր ֆիզիկական սահմանափակումներին: Նրան, հավանաբար, կերակրել են, խնամել եւ պաշտպանել հետագա վտանգից:

Գիտնականները նշել են, որ նման դեպքերը չափազանց հազվադեպ են. սովորաբար, պալեոլիթի եւ նեոլիթի ժամանակաշրջաններում խոշոր գիշատիչների հարձակումները հանգեցնում էին ակնթարթային մահվան կամ անհամեմատ ավելի քիչ տեսանելի հետքեր էին թողնում: Հենց բուժված վնասվածքներն են ենթադրում, որ համայնքը աջակցություն է ցուցաբերել վիրավոր անհատին, ինչն արտացոլում է ոչ միայն հին հասարակությունների ֆիզիկական, այլեւ սոցիալական բաղադրիչը։

Վնասվածքների վերլուծությունը նաեւ ցույց է տվել, որ հարձակումը պատահական վնասվածքի չէր հանգեցրել, այլ առյուծի հետ ագրեսիվ հանդիպման հետեւանք էր՝ հզոր եւ վտանգավոր գիշատիչ, որն այդ ժամանակ բնակվում էր Բալկաններում եւ լուրջ սպառնալիք էր մարդկանց համար: Այդ կենդանին կարող էր հարձակվել մարդու վրա որսի ժամանակ, կեցավայրի մոտ կամ պատահաբար հանդիպել վայրի տեղանքում:
