Կապանի տարածքում հայտնաբերվել է 4-5-րդ դարերի եռանավ բազիլիկ եկեղեցու հիմքեր ու սյուների խարիսխներ

Ստեփանոս Օրբելյանի «Հայոց պատմություն» գրքում, 5-րդ դարի իրադարձությունների վերաբերյալ, հիշատակվում է. «Եվ Կապանից այստեղ եկավ հայր Հովհաննեսը, վանականներին վերցնելով գնաց գետի ափը և Տիրոջից խնդրեց վանականների կարիքների համար ձուկ շնորհել…» (էջ 118)։
Ստեփանոս Օրբելյանի հիշատակած Կապան բնակավայրը գտնվում է ներկայիս Սյունիքի մարզկենտրոն Կապան քաղաքից դեպի Քաջարան տանող ճանապարհի ձախակողմյան ոչ բարձր բլրի վրա՝ Ողջի գետի աջ ափին։ Տեղացիները տարածքն, որը այժմ ամբողջությամբ անտառապատ է, անվանում են «Տանձու լենջ»։ Այստեղ դեռևս 5-րդ դարում գոյություն է ունեցել Սյունյաց իշխանների բնակավայր-ամրոցը, որը 10-րդ դարում արդեն վերածվել էր քաղաքի՝ Սյունիքի թագավորների նստավայրի և մայրաքաղաքի։ Սյունիքի թագավորության անկումից հետո բնակավայրը կորցրել է իր նշանակությունը, լքվել և ամայացել։
ՀՀ ԳԱԱ Հնագիտության և ազգագրության ինստիտուտից հայտնում են, որ ներկայումս ինստիտուտի հնագիտական արշավախումբը տարածքում իրականացնում է պեղումներ։ Պեղումների ղեկավար, հնագետ Գագիկ Սարգսյանի տեղեկացմամբ, այստեղ որոշ ուսումնասիրություններ կատարվել էին դեռևս խորհրդային տարիներին, և հնավայրը ճանաչվել էր որպես պատմամշակութային հուշարձան։ Սակայն նման ծավալով համակարգված պեղումներ և համալիր ուսումնասիրություններ առաջին անգամ են իրականացվում։
Հուշարձանի տարածքում պահպանվել են բազմաթիվ շինությունների հիմքեր, պատեր ու ավերակներ։ Առանձնակի հետաքրքրություն է ներկայացնում թագավորական պալատը, որի տարածքում շինությունները պատկանում են տարբեր ժամանակաշրջանների։ Ավելի ուշ կառուցված շինության տակ հայտնաբերվել են վաղ շրջանի (4-5-րդ դարերի) եռանավ բազիլիկ եկեղեցու հիմքեր ու սյուների խարիսխներ։ Եկեղեցու պայտաձև խորանի եզրամասի վրա հետագայում կառուցվել է պատ։ Շինության հատակը սկզբնապես եղել է սալապատ, սակայն հետագայում մոտ 25 սմ լցանյութի վրա դրվել է նոր սալահատակ։
Եկեղեցուն հարևանությամբ բացվել է նաև քարով կառուցված մոտ 1,2 մ տրամագծով ձիթհան։ Այսպես կոչված պալատական համալիրից մոտ 30 մ հարավ պահպանվել է մեկ այլ շինության ավերակ, որը եղել է փոքր չափերի մատուռ՝ ուղղանկյուն խորանով։ Չնայած տարածքի ամբողջությամբ անտառապատ ու մացառապատ լինելուն, հստակ տեսանելի է, որ բնակավայր-ամրոցատեղին ամբողջությամբ պարսպապատ է եղել։ Որոշ հատվածներում պարիսպները կառուցված են երկշերտ։
Կառույցների արևելյան կողմում պահպանվել է նաև երբեմնի հզոր աշտարակի մի հատված՝ մոտ 4 մ բարձրությամբ, որտեղից գտնվել է ամրոցի մուտքերից մեկը։
Պեղումները շարունակվում են, և հնագետների առջև դեռևս բազմաթիվ բացահայտման ենթակա հարցեր կան։
