Այնպես չէ, որ հաստ մաշկը ավելի լավ է պաշտպանում կենդանուն: Բանն այն է, որ նման դեր կարող է կատարել անգամ բարակ մաշկը, եթե այն ունի որոշակի առանձնահատկություն: Օրինակ, աֆրիկյան փշոտ մկան մաշկը ունի այդ յուրահատկությունը: Այս փոքրիկ կրծող կենդանին իր մաշկում ունի բազմաթիվ մազային ֆոլիկուլներ: Ընդ որում, նրա մաշկը շատ նուրբ է սովորական այլ կենդանիների մաշկի հետ համեմատած և այն 3 անգամ հեշտ է պատռել, քան սովորական մկան մաշկը: Սրա նպատակն այն է, որ այս մկնիկը հեշտությամբ է պոկվում գիշատիչների ճանկերից՝ նրան թողնելով միայն իր մաշկի մի մասը. անգամ եթե գիշատիչը կծում է նրան, ապա նրա երախում մնում է միայն պոկված մաշկը, իսկ կենդանին փրկվում է՝ փախուստի դիմելով: Հետագայում արդեն փրկված մկնիկի մաշկը մի քանի օրվա ընթացքում ռեգեներացիայի է ենթարկվում՝ շնորհիվ մազային ֆոլիկուլների: Արդյունքում «մաշկվելը» այս մկնիկին ոչ մի տհաճություն չի պատճառում:
