Էյնշտեյնի պատասխանը 6-րդ դասարանի աղջնակին

Երբեմն երեխաներին հաջողվում է մի գեղեցիկ հարցադրումով արվեստի կամ գիտության երևելիներից այնպիսի հարցերի պատասխան կորզել, որի վրա դարերով գլուխ են կոտրել շատ հանճարեղ փիլիսոփաներ: Այդպես պատահեց նաև այս անգամ, երբ 1936 թվականին նյու-յորքցի մի աղջիկ նամակով հարց ուղղեց Ալբերտ Էնշտեյնին:
«Հարգելի Էնշտեյն, կիրակնօրյա դպրոցում պարապմունքի ժամանակ հարց ծագեց, թե աղոթու՞մ են արդյոք գիտնականները: Այս հարցը բխեց մի այլ հարցից՝ կարելի՞ է միաժամանակ հավատալ և գիտությանը, և կրոնին: Հիմա մենք նամակներ ենք գրում գիտնականներին և այլ կարևոր մարդկանց, որպեսզի նրանք մեզ պատասխանեն՝ աղոթում են արդյո՞ք գիտնականները և, եթե այո, ինչի համար են նրանք աղոթում: Հիմա մենք VI դասարանում ենք սովորում, տիկին Էլլիսն է մեր դասղեկը: Հարգանքներով Ֆիլլիս»:
Հինգ օր անց Էնշտեյնը մի լակոնիկ պատասխան ուղարկեց Ֆիլլիսին: Այն խիստ համահունչ է Կարլ Սագանի և Կլավդիոս Պտոմելեյի նույն թեմայով մտորումների հետ:
«Թանկագին Ֆիլլիս, ես կաշխատեմ պատասխանել որքան հնարավոր է պարզ ու հասկանալի: Ահա իմ պատասխանը. գիտնականները կարծում են, որ բոլոր իրադարձությունները, որ լինում են երկրի վրա և մարդկանց հետ, կատարվում են բնության օրենքների շնորհիվ: Դրա համար էլ գիտնականը չի կարող համոզված պնդել, որ իրադարձությունների վրա կարող են ազդել աղոթքները, այսինքն՝ գերբնական ուժերը: Այնուամենայնիվ պիտի խոստովանենք, որ մեր գիտելիքներն այդ ուժերի մասին անբավարար ու անկատար են: Այնպես, որ աշխարհի վերջի և միասնական Ոգու մասին համոզմունքը հանգում է հավատքին: Չնայած գիտության նվաճումներին, այդ հավատքը լայնորեն տարածված է ողջ աշխարհում: Բացի դրանից, բոլոր նրանք, ովքեր լրջորեն զբաղվում են գիտությամբ, պարզվում է, համոզված են նրանում, որ կա մի Ոգի, շատ ուժեղ մարդկային ոգուց ու մտքից, կառավարում է Տեզերական օրենքները: Այսպիսով գիտությամբ զբաղվելը առաջացնում է առանձնահատուկ կրոնական զգացում, որն իրարկե, տարբերվում է մյուսներից, ավելի պարզունակներից»:
