Դեպրեսիան ընդամենը տխրություն չէ: Այն հիվանդություն է, որը հարկավոր է բուժել:
 
 
Դեպրեսիան տրամադրության անկման այն ձևն է, որի ժամանակ տեղի է ունենում խզում հուզական վիճակի և իրականության միջև։ Դեպրեսիայի ժամանակ տրամադրության և ինքնազգացում անկումից բացի, դիտվում են մտածողության դանդաղում, ուշադրության անկայունություն, շարժումների դանդաղում (արգելակում), ինքնագնահատման անկում, հյուծվածություն, հոռետեսություն։ Հիվանդը կորցնում է հետաքրքրությունը, ինքնավստահությունը, խանգարվում է քունը։ Առաջանում է մեղքի և մեղավորության զգացում, ինչը կարող է անգամ ինքնասպանության հանգեցնել:
 
Փորձերը ցույց են տվել, որ դեպրեսիայի ախտանիշները զգալի թուլանում են ընդհանուր անզգայացման ներարկումից:
