Պաշտպանության նախարարը «սկզբունքորեն պետք է լինի քաղաքական պաշտոնյա, ոչ թե զինվորական»: Մի քանի լրագրողի հետ զրույցում ասաց պաշտպանության նորանշանակ նախարար Վիգեն Սարգսյանը: 

«Ես կարծում եմ, որ նրանք, ովքեր ծանոթ են ՀՀ Սահմանադրությանը, գիտեն, որ Պաշտպանության նախարարության հիմնական գործառույթը քաղաքացիական վերահսկողությունն է Զինված ուժերի նկատմամբ ու կապն է ԶՈՒ և պետության մնացած բոլոր կառույցների միջև, որոնք պետք է մոբիլիզացվեն ռազմական գործողությունների պարագայում: Կարծում եմ, որ  Պաշտպանության նախարարության գործառույթը հենց դա է։ Սկզբունքորեն, պաշտպանության նախարարը պետք է լինի քաղաքական պաշտոնյա, ոչ թե զինվորական»,- ասաց Վիգեն Սարգսյանը:

Պատասխանելով այն հարցին, թե ինչ փոփոխություններ եք նախատեսում անցկացնել գերատեսչությունում, հատկապես` ապրիլյան պատերազմից հետո, Վիգեն Սարգսյանը պատասխանեց, որ առաջիկա օրերին, երբ Կառավարությունն իր ծրագիրը ներկայացնի խորհրդարանին, հստակ ամրագրված կլինեն պաշտպանության ոլորտում այս կառավարության հիմնական նպատակներն ու ուղղությունները: Բացի այդ, Վիգեն Սարգսյանն ասաց, որ իր կարծիքով պետության բոլոր կառույցները մշտապես պետք է ժամանակի մի մասը հատկացնեն երկրի պաշտպանության խնդիրներում իրենց ներդրումն ունենալուն:
