Այս տարեց կինը ցանկանում էր իր համար կոշիկներ գնել, բայց չէր էլ պատկերացնում, որ այդ օրն իր կյանքում ճակատագրական է դառնալու:
Արևմտյան Նյու Յորքի բնակչուհի Մարի Վասկեսը 93 տարեկան է: Նա 3 կաթված է տարել և այսօր ապրում է Արևելյան Հարլեմի ծերանոցում: Նա հազվադեպ է փողոց դուրս գալիս, քանի որ տեղաշարժվում է սայլակով: Այդ օրը նա որոշեց կանխիկացնել իր 600 դոլար թոշակը և նոր կոշիկ գնել: Դեռ բանկում կինը նկատեց մի երիտասարդի, ով ուշադիր իրեն է զննում, բայց առանձնապես ուշադրություն չդարձրեց: Հետո պետք է պարզվեր, որ հանրախանութում, նրա կրծկալի միջից գողություն կատարող նույն մարդն էր:
Կորուստը նկատելուց հետո Մարիան միանգամից օգնություն կանչեց, բայց գողն արդեն չքվել էր խանութից: Գողին «քաղաքի ամենավատ մարդը» կոչումը տվեցին բնակիչները: Բայց դեռ ամեն ինչ կորած չէր: Անվտանգության տեսախցիկները ֆիքսել էին գողության պահն ու գողին և ոստիկանությունը 2 օր անց ձերբակալեց Բրուկլինի 26-ամյա բնակչին:
Թվում է թե արդարությունը հաղթանակեց, բայց սա դեռ ամենը չէր: Հանրախանութի տնօրենը, որպես վնասի փոխհատուցում, Մարիին 600 դոլար նվիրեց: Բացի այդ նա նվիրեց այն կոշիկը, որը կինը ցանկանում էր ձեռք բերել այդ չարաբաստիկ օրը:
Իսկ Արևմտյան Նյու Յորքի քաղաքապետ Ֆելքիս Ռոուկը կնոջը 1000 դոլար նվիրեց: Բայց սրանով ևս հրաշքը չավարտվեց: Քաղաքացիները առցնաց դրամահավաք էին կազմակերպել, որի արդյունքում հավաքված 2000 դոլարը ևս նվիրաբերեցին Մարիին:
Իսկ անձամբ Մարին խոստովանում է, որ անծանոթ մարդկանցից նման ջերմ վերաբերմունք չէր ակնկալում: Սա ևս մեկ անգամ ապացուցում է, որ աշխարհը նման բարի մարդկանց շնորհիվ է դիմակայում թոշակառու կնոջ 26-ամյա կողոպտիչներին:
