Վաղ մակությունից յուրաքանչյուրս գիտենք, որ ջրում երկար մնալուց հետո ձեռքերի ու ոտնաթաթերի մաշկը կնճռոտվում է: Սկզբում գիտնականներն այս երևույթը բացատրում էին այսպես. մաշկը շատ հեղուկ է կլանում, դրա հետևանքով ընդարձակվում է:
Սակայն այս տարբերակը շատ շուտ հերքվեց, որովհետև եթե այդպես լիներ, ապա մարմինն ամբողջությամբ պիտի կնճռոտվեր ջրում երկար մնալուց հետո: Եվ ահա 1935թ. գիտնականների մի խումբ արձանագրեց, որ նյարդային խանգարումներով մարդկանց մոտ ջրում երկար մնալուց հետո մաշկը չի կնճռոտվում:
Ուստի երևույթի բացատրությունը պետք էր փնտրել նյարդաբուժության բնագավառում: Եվ ահա բժիշկների ուսումնասիրությունները հանգեցրին հետևյալ եզրակացությանը. ջրում երկար ժամական մնալու հետևանքով մարդու դաստակների և ոտնաթաթերի կնճռոտվելը միայն ու միայն օրգանիզմի պաշտպանական ռեակցիան է:
Կենսաբանները կարծում են, որ օրգանիզմի այս ռեֆլեքսը մարդու մոտ ձևավորվել է էվոլյուցիայի արդյունքում: Այսկերպ բնությունը հոգացել է այն մասին, որ մարդու մաշկը թաց միջավայրում փոխշփնամ հնարավորություն ունենա և ոչ թե լինի լպրծուն ու սղլիկ:
