LIFE

Unusual lifestyle: Eight members of Twin Oaks - a commune in rural Virginia with a population of only 105 - are pictured watching a DVD

Joyful: The commune comprises 92 adults and 13 children, who live a lifestyle of 'clever poverty'. Above, toddler Luuk Spenser is held by his mother, Elsa Spenser, left, and Kele Tassari, as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the commune's founding in 2007

'Collaborative and loving': On a daily basis, residents live in harmony below the poverty line, sharing resources with each other. They grow vegetables together, drive communal cars from Twin Oaks' main office, look after each other's children and eschew monogamy

Dancing: Children attend a homeschool in the commune and are required to start working one hour a week at the tender age of four. Above, members and former members of Twin Oaks dance during the 40th anniversary celebrations on June 15, 2007, near Yanceyville

Reading time: Incredibly, residents all get an equal monthly allowance of a mere $103, which they are given for completing 42 hours of labor a week (this drops to one hour a week when they turn 50). The work they do includes cooking, cleaning and milking cows

Gardening: The work also involves gardening (above) and making tofu and rope hammocks, which the commune sells commercially

'Free': Although members of Twin Oaks have no hope of getting rich, they do not care - because they will never be poor or unemployed

Male and female actors in a community theater group join hands ahead of their first performance in June 2007

Community: 'The big sacrifice you make in living here is you'll never become wealthy,' resident Keenan Dakota said. 'I mean, you're not going to hit the jackpot and suddenly make it to the top. However, you are never going to be poor, you're never going to be unemployed'

In good spirits: Inside Twin Oaks, residents have access to the internet, but televisions, video games and guns are banned

Playing: They sleep in 'small rooms' in their communal homes, can set their own schedules, and help to look after the 13 youngsters

A resident named Ezra spends time with his son Zadek

Joint decisions: The decision to have a baby is also a shared one among residents. 'Having a child is not something you can take for granted, that you can just decide to do on your own because you’re not responsible for financing that kid’s upbringing,' one local said

At one with nature: A Twin Oaks member called Mushroom holds a black snake she found in a woodpile outside a communal building

At work: A man named Hans wears a sundress while building shelves in the woodshop at the Twin Oaks commune in Virginia in 2005

Dressed up: Twin Oaks' co-founders used acclaimed psychologist B.F. Skinner's classic novel 'Walden Two' as the blueprint in 1967

Grassy: And more than half a century on, the commune remains a 'collaborative and self-sustaining' place. Many residents have several boyfriends and girlfriends (sometimes, in addition to a spouse) - and even see polygamy as beneficial to child rearing
