Օքսֆորդի համալսարանի գիտնականները հանգել են եզրակացության, որ համբույրի միջոցով կանայք փորձում են «իդեալական տղամարդ» գտնել: Համբույրը կնոջը հնարավորություն է տալիս ենթագիտակցորեն գնահատել զուգընկերոջը, եզրակացություն անել նրա հետ համատեղելիության և զուգընկերոջ ընդհանուր առողջական վիճակի մասին: Գիտնականները նշում են նաև, որ համբույրը զույգերին օգնում է կապվածություն հաստատել և պահպանել այն: Որքան բարձր է , այսպես ասած, հարաբերությունների որակը, այնքան հաճախակի են համբույրները համատեղ կյանքում:
Օքսֆորդի համալսարանի փորձարարական հոգեբանության ամբիոնի առաջատար մասնագետ Ռաֆայել Վլոդարսկին նշել է. «Գրեթե բոլոր հասարակություններում և մշակույթներում համբույրները` տարբեր դրսևորումներով, լայնորեն տարածված են: Սակայն մինչ այժմ մենք չգիտենք, թե ինչով է դա պայմանավորված և ինչ գործառույթ են դրանք իրականացնում»: Ուսումնասիրության ընթացքում, որի արդյունքները հրապարակվել են «Մարդկային բնություն» ամսագրում, հարցման է անցկացվել 900 չափահասի շրջանում: Մասնակիցների կեսից ավելին մշտական զուգընկեր է ունեցել: Փորձի նպատակն է եղել պարզել, թե ինչու են մարդիկ համբուրվում:
«Սեռական հարաբերություններում համբույրի դերի առնչությամբ երեք հիմնական տեսություն կա. համաձայն առաջինի, դրանք օգնում են գնահատել պոտենցիալ զուգընկերոջ գենետիկ հատկանիշները, երկրորդ` գրգռող լրացուցիչ խթան են հանդիսանում սեքսից առաջ և երրորդ` օգնում են պահպանել հարաբերությունները: Մենք փորձում էինք պարզել` այս տեսություններից որն է առավել հավանական»,-նշում է Վլոդարսկին: Ինչպես ցույց են տալիս ուսումնասիրությունները, կանանց համար համբույրներն առավել կարևոր են, քան` տղամարդկանց համար:
Ենթադրվում է, որ կանայք ապագա զուգընկերոջ ընտրության հարցում առավել «բծախնդիր են»: Հնարավոր է դա պայմանավորված է այն գիտակցմամբ, որ ապագա երեխաների դաստիարակության և խնամքի հարցերում նրանք ստիպված են լինելու առավել մեծ ժամանակ և ջանք ներդնել, քան զուգընկերները: «Ուսումնասիրության արդյունքները վկայում են, որ համբույրի ժամանակ մենք որոշակի ինֆորմացիա ենք ստանում, ինչպես և փոխանցում: Այն առիթ է հանդիսանում, որպեսզի զուգընկերները սոցիալապես ընդունելի և ընկալելի տարբերակով հավելյալ տեղեկատվություն ձեռք բերեն միմյանց մասին»,-նշում է Վլոդարսկին:
Գիտնականի կարծիքով, համբուրվելիս մարդիկ քիմիական ազդակներ են ստանում, արձագանքելով համին ու հոտին`ենթագիտակցական մակարդակով փորձում ենք կողմնորոշվել արդյոք նրանք գենետիկորեն համատեղելի են պոտենցիալ զուգընկերոջ հետ:
