Այս ընտանիքի պատմությունը շատ տարիներ առաջ է սկսվել: Էկվադորցի սովորական մի մարդ, օրերից մի օր պատահաբար նկատեց, որ դրսի աղբամանի կողքին ընկած տոպրակի մեջ ինչ-որ բան է շարժվում: Բացելով տոպրակը՝ տղամարդը սարսափեց, քանի որ այնտեղից իր վրա նորածին երեխա էր նայում:
Երբ տղամարդը դժբախտ երեխային տարավ հիվանդանոց, բժիշկներն անմիջապես հասկացան, թե ինչի համար է անհայտ մայրը նման կերպ վարվել երեխայի հետ: Տղան, որին հետագայում անվանեcին Էդդի, լույս աշխարհ էր եկել Դաունի սրնդրոմով: Բարեբախտաբար այդ տղամարդը ժամանակին էր գտել նորածնին և փոքրիկը չէր հասցրել սառչել կամ հիվանդանալ:
Երեխային մանկատուն ուղարկեցին, որտեղ, ավելի ուշ, նրան Ջիմի և Ռեյչել վան Էրդեննները գտան: Տեսնելով փոքրիկին՝ կինն անմիջապես հասկացավ, որ առանց նրա չի հեռանա մանկատնից: Էրդեններն արդեն երկու երեխա ունեին, բայց Դաունի սինդրոմով փոքրիկն անմիջապես գրավեց այդ կնոջ սիրտը:
Այդ կնոջ եղբայրը նույնպես տառապում էր այդ սինդրոմով, և Ռեյչելը ընդհանրապես չէր կասկածում, որ կարող է հոգ տանել տղայի մասին: Այսօր, նայելով Էդդիի երջանիկ դեմքին, յուրաքանչյուրը կհասկանա, որ այս ընտանիքում փոքրիկին իրոք սիրում են:
