Ալիև—Մերկել հանդիպման ընթացքում Մերկելը հնչեցրել է երկու վտանգավոր հայտարարություն Հայաստանի համար։ Նախ նա ասել է, որ հայ-թուրքական լարվածությունը կթեթևանա, եթե Արցախյան հիմնախնդիրը լուծվի։ Իհարկե սա տիպիկ թուրքական պետական դիրքորոշում է՝ հայ-թուրքական հարաբերությունները Արցախյան հիմնախնդրի լուծման պրիզմայից դիտարկելը, որն իր մեջ մշտապես պանթուրքիստական հստակ ուղերձ է պարունակել, և երրորդ երկրի համար հայ-թուրքական հարաբերությունների բարելավումը մեկ այլ երկրի՝ այս դեպքում Ադրբեջանի հետ Հայաստանի կոնֆլիկտի լուծման հետ պայմանավորելը առնվազն պրոադրբեջանական դիրքորոշում է հակակամարտության մեջ։ Այսինքն տարածքներ զիջեք, որ Թուրքիայի հետ էլ, Ադրբեջանի հետ էլ հարաբերությունները կարգավորվեն և տարածաշրջանային լարվածությունը թուլանա։ 
Մյուս հայտարարությունը պատմաբանների հանձնաժողով ստեղծելու մասին էր։ Մի երկրի կանցլերը, որի խորհրդարանն արդեն ճանաչել և դատապարտել է պատմական իրողությունները, առաջարկում է հետ քայլ անել, դարձյալ հանձնաժող ստեղծել պատմաբաններից հասկանալու համար՝ եղել է ցեղասպանություն, թե՝ ոչ, կամ արդյոք եղածը ցեղասպանություն էր թե ոչ։ Պատմաբանների հանձնաժողովի ստեղծումը թուրքական ժխտողական քաղաքականության մի բաղադրիչն է, որը հարցը քաղաքական-իրավական բնույթից զրկելու նպատակ ունի, իսկ եթե Մերկելը կրկնում է այս նույն անհիմն թուրքական թեզը, որը միանշանակ անում է հասկանալով, ապա դա Հայոց ցեղասպանության միջազգային ճանաչման գործընթացը խոչընդոտելու և քաղաքական և միջազգային իրավունքի հարթակից անկարևոր՝ հարթակներ տեղափոխելու փորձ է։
