Վիեննայում կայացած հանդիպումը հայկական կողմի քաղաքական հաղթանակն էր: Այս մասին «Արմենպրես»-ի հետ զրույցում նշեց ՀՀ պաշտպանության նախկին նախարար Վաղարշակ Հարությունյանը: «Ընդհանրապես պետք չէ տարանջատել ռազմականը կամ քաղաքականը` անկախ նրանից՝ մենք տարածքներ ենք կորցրել, թե չէ, ինչը բնականաբար լավ չէ: Այս հանդիպմանը պետք է գնահատական տալ ռազմաքաղաքական տեսանկյունից, քանի որ, անկախ մեր տարածքային կորուստներից, ապրիլյան իրադարձություններում մեր բանակը հաղթանակեց. մենք փաստացիորեն ձախողեցինք ադրբեջանական բանակի ծրագիրը եւ ցույց տվեցինք, որ անկախ նրանից, թե Ադրբեջանը ինչ գումարներ է ծախսել բանակի վրա, իր բանակը չի դարձել մարտունակ եւ իրենց առջեւ դրված խնդիրը չի լուծել: Ադրբեջանի համար ղարաբաղյան հարցի ռազմական լուծումը փակ թեմա է»,- ասաց պաշտպանության նախկին նախարարը:

Նրա խոսքով՝ կարեւորը, որ 800 հա տարածքը բնակեցված չէ եւ մարտավարական առավելություն չի ապահովում: «Նորից եմ կրկնում, որ, բնականաբար, լավ չէ տարածքների կորուստ ունենալը, սակայն բոլորը պետք է հասկանան եւ վստահեն բանակին: Շատ են խոսում, որ պիտի գնանք եւ վերադարձնենք տարածքները, սակայն ինչի՞ կհասնենք մենք դրանով. կհասնենք նրան, որ Ադրբեջանը այդ վերցրած դիրքերը ավելի կամրապնդի, եւ հիմա դրանք վերցնելն ուղղակի կլինի անգրագիտություն: Ես համոզված եմ, որ մեր բանակը ճիշտ ժամանակին, ճիշտ տեղում կմշակի համապատասխան պլան եւ կիրականացնի այն»,-ասաց Հարությունյանը:

«Արպենպրես»-ի այն հարցին, թե ինչով էր պայմանավորված Ադրբեջանի համաձայնությունը՝ մասնակցելու այս հանդիպմանը, նախկին նախարարը պատասխանեց. «Ադրբեջանի ոտնձգության նպատակը հենց այս բանակցություններն էին, որպեսզի այսպես Մինսկի խումբը հանդես գար Ղարաբաղը Ադրբեջանին հանձնելու առաջարկով, սակայն նրանք ստացան հակառակ արդյունքը, եւ նա ստիպված գնաց եւ ՀՀ նախագահի օրակարգով նստեց  բանակցությունների սեղանի շուրջ, համաձայնեց, որ զինադադարի մեխանիզները հաստատվեն. սկզբում Ադրբեջանը տատանվում էր գնալ, թե չգնալ, սակայն ի վերջո համաձայնեց, ինչը, հասկանալի էր, պարտություն է նրանց համար»:

Ապրիլի 1-ի լույս 2-ի գիշերը Ադրբեջանը լայնածավալ ռազմական հարձակում իրականացրեց Արցախի հետ շփման գծի ողջ երկայնքով: Քառօրյա պատերազմից հետո ադրբեջանական զինուժը հետ շպրտվեց` ունենալով, տարբեր տեղեկություններով, 300-400 մարդկային ուժի և տեխնիկայի հսկայածավալ կորուստ: Կրակի դադարեցման մասին պայմանավորվածություն ձեռք բերվեց ապրիլի 5-ին Մոսկվայում` ՀՀ և Ադրբեջանի զինված ուժերի գլխավոր շտաբների պետերի կողմից: Իսկ Հայաստանի և Ադրբեջանի նախագահների հանդիպումը Վիեննայում կայացավ մայիսի 16-ին:
