1․ Միջնադարից
Միջնադարում կոճակները համարվում էին պճնանքի առարկա, քանի որ այն պատրաստվում էր թանկարժեք քարերից։ Ոսկյա և արծաթյա կոճակները խոսում էին հասարակության մեջ հատուկ կարգավիճակի և բարձ դիրքի մասին։ Իսկ ազնվական ընտանիքների կանայք երբեք ինքնուրույն չէին հագնվում, քանի որ նրանց օգնում էին աղախինները։ Եվ նրանց հարմար լինելու համար կոճակները կարվում էին հագուստի ձախ կողմից։
Ինչ վերբերվում է տղամարդկանց, ապա նույնիսկ ազնվականները հագնվել են ինքնուրույն և նրանց հարմար էր սեփական կոճակները կոճկել աջից։
Բացի դա, եվրոպացիները հաճախ էին մասնակցում ռազմական արշավանքներին, և զինված զինվորին հարմար էր աջ ձեռքը տաքացնել ձախ թևի տակ։
2. Կարևորը հարմարությունն է
Երկրորդ վարկածի համաձայն՝ տղամարդկանց և կանանց հագուստի կոճակները կարվել են տարբեր կողմերում միայն այն պատճառով, որպեսզի նրանց հագուստները հնարավոր չլիներ շփոթել։
3. Կերակրող մայրերի համար
Երրորդ վարկածի համաձայն կերակրող մայրերին ավելի հարմար է երեխային ձախ ձեռքով բռնել և կերակրել ձախ կրծքով։ Այդպես աջ ձեռքը ազատ էր մնում և կարելի էր այլ գործն անել։ Բացի դա, ձախ ձեռքում պարկած երեխային հարմար էր աջ ձեռքով ծածկել կամ շորերն ուղղել։
