 Թուրքիայի կողմից պատմության ժխտումը չի կարող շարունակվել: Այս մասին «Արմենպրես»-ի հետ զրույցում նշեց Լոնդոնի Միդլսեքս համալսարանի միջազգային իրավունքի պրոֆեսոր Ուիլյամ Շաբասը, ով վստահ է, որ շատ թուրքեր հասկանում են, որ հայ ժողովրդի դեմ 1915 թվականին կատարվածի համար պատասխանատու է իրենց կառավարությունը:

«Դա Թուրքիայի պատմության ամենամութ էջերից մեկն է»,- ընդգծեց պրոֆեսորը: Նա նշեց, որ այսօր աշխարհում կան շատ մարդիկ, ովքեր տեղյակ են մեկ դար առաջ Թուրքիայի կողմից իրականացված Հայոց ցեղասպանության մասին:

«Սակայն որոշ երկրների կառավարություններ, որոնք ճնշումների են ենթարկվում Թուրքիայի կողմից և մտահոգվում են այդ երկրի հետ իրենց հարաբերությունների համար, երկմտում են, ինչը հեղինակազրկում է հենց իրենց», -փաստեց Շաբասը:

Նա համոզմունք հայտնեց, որ ապագայում ցեղասպանությունների կանխարգելման համար անհրաժեշտ է, որ ճանաչվի անցյալում իրականացված ցեղասպանությունը: «Եթե քաղաքական մտահոգությունները երանգներ են տալիս պատմական դեպքերի ընկալումներին, ապա կա մտահոգություն, որ դրանք նմանօրինակ ազդեցություն կունենան նաև ներկայում իրականացվող կոտորածների նկատմամբ: Սա է իրական մտահոգության առիթը»,- ասաց պրոֆեսորը:

Անդրադառնալով Հայաստանի ու Թուրքիայի ժողովուրդների միջև հաշտեցման հնարավորությանը՝ Շաբասն ընդգծեց, որ դրա համար անհրաժեշտ է ընդհանուր պատմության համատեղ ընկալում: «Դա ենթադրում է, որ պետք է ճանաչվեն այն սարսափելի հանցագործությունները, որոնք մեկ դար առաջ տեղի են ունեցել հայերի նկատմամբ»,- նշեց գիտնականը: Նա առաջարկեց հայերի հետ կատարվածին տալ «մարդկության դեմ իրականացված հանցագործություն» որակավորումը՝ նշելով, որ գուցե այդ դեպքում Թուրքիայի համար ավելի հեշտ լինի առերեսվել կատարվածի հետ:
