Ադրբեջանական ագրեսիայի հետեւանքով զոհված մայոր Սուրեն Մելքումյանը Արցախի Պաշտպանության բանակում ծառայում էր 1997թ.-ից: Հադրութցի մայորը, ավարտելով Երեւանի Վազգեն Սարգսյանի անվան ռազմական ինստիտուտը, նորից վերադարձել էր Հադրութ՝ ծառայության անցնելու նպատակով:
«Սուրենը 4 որդի ուներ, միշտ ասում էր՝ դիրքեր եմ բարձրանում, որ երեխաներս ինձնով հպարտանան, պարծենան: Այդպես էլ եղավ. չորս որդիները պիտի միշտ իմանան, որ իրենց հայրը հերոսի մահով է ընկել»,- NEWS.am-ի թղթակցին պատմեց նրա հարեւանուհին՝ Նելլի Երեմյանը:
37-ամյա Սուրեն Մելքումյանն իր 5 ընկերների հետ անհետացել էր ապրիլի 1-ի լույս 2-ի գիշերը: Ընտանիքը մինչեւ ապրիլի 10-ը որեւէ նորություն չուներ. ըստ հարեւանուհու, հարազատների զանգերին Սուրենի հեռախոսով պատասխանել են ադրբեջանցիները:
«Հարազատները չեն հասկացել, թե ինչ են ասել... միայն ամսի 10-ին իմացանք, որ Սուրենի մարմինն ադրբեջանցիները հանձնել են»,- նշեց հարեւանուհին:
Սուրեն Մելքումյանին հուղարկավորել են ապրիլի 12-ին հայրենի Տումի գյուղում:
