«Առաջին ժամադրությունից ե՛ւ տղամարդու, ե՛ւ կնոջ ակնկալիքներն առաջին հերթին կապված են այն բանի հետ, թե ինչ են նրանք ընդհանրապես ցանկանում այդ պոտենցիալ հարաբերություններից: Օրինակ՝ եթե երկուսն էլ պարզապես շփում են ուզում, ապա, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, նման հարաբերությունների հետագա զարգացում կլինի: Իսկ եթե նրանցից մեկն ավելին է ակնկալում, ապա այն ստանալու համար անհրաժեշտ է, որ դա ցանկանա նաեւ մյուսը: Սակայն պետք չէ մոռանալ, որ հարաբերությունները շատ դինամիկ են եւ զուգընկերների նպատակներն ու ակնկալիքները կարող են առաջին շփման ընթացքում փոխվել:
Իհարկե, տղամարդիկ առաջին հերթին մասամբ սեռական հարաբերություններ են ակնկալում, բայց պետք չէ այդ ուղղությամբ կենտրոնանալ: Եթե տղամարդը կնոջ համար հետաքրքիր է, ապա կինը կարող է նրա մոտ ավելի խորը հետաքրքրություն առաջացնել եւ ստիպել իրեն ընկալել ոչ միայն որպես սեքսի օբյեկտ: Իսկ սեռական հետաքրքրվածությունը նորմալ է, որը կարող է վերափոխվել հարաբերությունների այլ մակարդակի:
