«Քաղցկեղ» ախտորոշումը շատերի մոտ անմիջապես ասոցացվում է մահացու հիվանդության հետ, սակայն ժամանակակից բժշկությունը ցույց է տալիս, որ դա միշտ չէ, որ համապատասխանում է իրականությանը։ Շատ տեսակի քաղցկեղներ վաղ հայտնաբերման և ճիշտ բուժման դեպքում կարող են հաջողությամբ վերահսկվել կամ նույնիսկ ամբողջությամբ բուժվել։

Քաղցկեղը սովորաբար համարվում է կյանքին սպառնացող, երբ հիվանդությունն անցել է առաջադեմ փուլերի և տարածվել է մարմնի այլ օրգաններ։ Այս գործընթացը կոչվում է մետաստազավորում։ Երբ քաղցկեղային բջիջները տարածվում են, օրինակ, լյարդ, թոքեր, ուղեղ կամ ոսկրեր, բուժումն ավելի բարդ է դառնում, թեև նույնիսկ այս փուլերում հնարավոր են բուժման տարբերակներ, որոնք կարող են երկարացնել կյանքը և բարելավել դրա որակը։

Ժամանակակից ուռուցքաբանությունն առաջարկում է բազմաթիվ բուժման մեթոդներ՝ վիրահատություն, ճառագայթային բուժում, քիմիաթերապիա, թիրախային բուժում, իմունաթերապիա և այլ մոտեցումներ։ Վերջին տարիներին այս մեթոդների զարգացումը զգալիորեն բարձրացրել է բազմաթիվ հիվանդների ապրելիությունը։

Բժիշկները մշտապես շեշտում են, որ վաղ ախտորոշումն ամենակարևոր գործոններից մեկն է։ Կանխարգելիչ զննումները, ուշադրությունը օրգանիզմի փոփոխությունների նկատմամբ և բժշկին ժամանակին դիմելը կարող են մեծացնել հաջող բուժման հավանականությունը։
