Հյուսիսային Կալիֆոռնիայի գյուղական շրջանում չորեքշաբթի առավոտյան տեղի է ունեցել 5,6 մագնիտուդով երկրաշարժ, որն ամենաուժեղն է տարածաշրջանում վերջին շուրջ 90 տարվա ընթացքում։ Երկրաշարժի մասին հաղորդում է NBC News հեռուստաալիքը։
Չնայած դրան, ստորգետնյա ցնցումները առաջացրել են միայն թույլ և չափավոր տատանումներ, ավերածությունների կամ տուժածների մասին տեղեկություններ չեն ստացվել։
ԱՄՆ Երկրաբանական ծառայության տվյալներով՝ էպիկենտրոնը գտնվել է Մենդոսինո շրջանի Ուիլիտս ագրարային քաղաքից մոտ 11 կիլոմետր դեպի հյուսիս-արևմուտք, Սան Ֆրանցիսկոյից մոտ 230 կիլոմետր դեպի հյուսիս-արևելք։ Օջախը գտնվել է մոտ 8 կիլոմետր խորության վրա։ Ցնցումները լայնորեն զգացվել են, դրանց թվում՝ Ֆորտ Բրագ ափամերձ քաղաքում։
Տեղի բնակիչները պատմել են, որ երկրաշարժի պահին շենքերում պատերը դողացել են, դարակաշարերից շշեր և իրեր են ընկել։ Կալպելա քաղաքի ռեստորաններից մեկում այցելուները հայտնել են, որ ցնցումն այնպիսի զգացողություն է թողել, կարծես շենքին ինչ-որ բան է հարվածել։
Մասնագետները նշում են, որ այս շրջանը չի պատկանում խոշոր բեկվածքների գոտուն, սակայն փոքր երկրաշարժեր այնտեղ կանոնավոր կերպով գրանցվում են։ Սեյսմոլոգ Լյուսի Ջոնսը հայտարարել է, որ նման իրադարձություններ այստեղ տեղի են ունենում, սակայն սովորաբար ավելի թույլ ուժգնություն են ունենում։ Ըստ նրա՝ հնարավոր են հետցնցումներ, սակայն դրանք, հավանաբար, թույլ կլինեն։
Հիմնական ցնցումից հետո առաջին ժամվա ընթացքում էպիկենտրոնի մոտակայքում գրանցվել է ևս մի քանի թույլ երկրաշարժ՝ մինչև 2,7 մագնիտուդով։
Արտակարգ արձագանքման ծառայությունները հայտնել են վնասների և տուժածների բացակայության մասին։ Ավելի քան 650 հազար մարդ երկրաշարժի մասին նախազգուշացում է ստացել MyShake վաղ ազդարարման համակարգի միջոցով, իսկ իշխանությունները շարունակում են իրավիճակի մոնիտորինգը։
