Ամուսնությունից առաջ էվոլյուցիայի հայր Չարլզ Դարվինը թուղթ է վերցրել, էջը բաժանել երկու մասի եւ գրել «կողմ»-ն ու «դեմ»-ը:
Սուրբ Վալենտինի օրվա առիթով Telegraph-ը ներկայացրել է Էմմա Ուեջվուդի հետ ամուսնությունից առաջ մեծ գիտնականի հույսերն ու մտավախությունները (նրա հետ Դարվինն ապրել է ավելի քան 40 տարի):
«Դեմ» բաժնում Դարվինը գրել է. «Չի կարելի գնալ՝ ուր ուզում եմ, ակումբներում զրուցել խելացի մարդկանց հետ, պետք է գնալ կնոջ հարազատների տուն եւ գլուխը լցնել ամեն տեսակ հիմարություններով, ստիպված չեմ լինի ծախսել երեխաների համար եւ անհանգստանալ նրանց մասին, ստիպված չենք լինի վիճել»: Բացի այդ, կնոջ հետ «ավելի քիչ գումար կմնա գրքերի համար եւ երեկոյան կարդալ չի ստացվի»:
Դարվինին գրավել են մտքերը «երեխաների մասին (եթե դա Աստծո կամքը լինի)», «կյանքում եւ ծերության տարիներին ընկերոջ մասին», «մեկի մասին, ով կհոգա տան հոգսերը», «երաժշտության եւ կանացի զրույցների հմայքը»:
