Պատվաստումների շուրջ բանավեճը տարիներ շարունակ չի լռում․ մի կողմից՝ առողջապահական համակարգն ու գիտական հանրույթը, մյուս կողմից՝ պատվաստումների նկատմամբ անվստահություն ունեցող խմբերը։ Սակայն եթե երբևէ ընդունվի ամենակտրուկ սցենարը՝ պատվաստումների արգելքը, դրա հետևանքները կարող են լինել ոչ միայն բժշկական, այլև սոցիալական, տնտեսական և նույնիսկ քաղաքական։

Առաջին և ամենաարագ արձանագրվող հետևանքը կլինի վարակիչ հիվանդությունների վերադարձը։ Հիվանդություններ, որոնք տարիներ շարունակ համարվել են վերահսկվող կամ գրեթե վերացած՝ կարմրուկ, դիֆթերիա, պոլիոմիելիտ, կարող են կրկին տարածվել։ Առավել խոցելի խմբերը՝ երեխաները, տարեցներն ու քրոնիկ հիվանդություններ ունեցողները, կհայտնվեն ուղիղ վտանգի տակ։

Առողջապահական համակարգը կհայտնվի ծանր ճնշման ներքո։ Հիվանդանոցներում կաճի հոսպիտալացումների թիվը, կբարձրանա բուժման ծախսը, իսկ բժիշկների և բուժանձնակազմի պակասը կդառնա ավելի տեսանելի։ Այն միջոցները, որոնք տարիներ շարունակ խնայվել են կանխարգելման հաշվին, կուղղվեն արդեն զարգացած հիվանդությունների բուժմանը։

Սոցիալական հետևանքներն էլ չեն ուշանա։ Դպրոցներում և մանկապարտեզներում կարող են առաջանալ փակման նոր ալիքներ, աշխատանքային կոլեկտիվներում՝ զանգվածային բացակայություններ։ Հանրային վախն ու անվստահությունը կուժեղանան, իսկ հասարակությունը կբաժանվի՝ «պատվաստումների կողմնակիցների» և «դեմ արտահայտվողների» ճամբարների։

Տնտեսական հարվածը ևս զգալի կլինի։ Հիվանդացության աճը կնվազեցնի աշխատունակ բնակչության արդյունավետությունը, կբարձրանան պետական ծախսերը, իսկ միջազգային գործընկերների մոտ կարող են առաջանալ հարցեր երկրի առողջապահական անվտանգության վերաբերյալ։ Որոշ երկրներ կարող են նույնիսկ սահմանափակումներ կիրառել նման պետությունից ժամանող քաղաքացիների նկատմամբ։

Վերջապես, պատվաստումների արգելքը կդառնա քաղաքական պատասխանատվության հարց։ Յուրաքանչյուր բռնկում, յուրաքանչյուր մահվան դեպք անմիջապես կուղղվի որոշում ընդունողների դեմ՝ որպես անգործության կամ պոպուլիզմի հետևանք։ Հանրային վստահության կորուստը կարող է լինել ավելի վտանգավոր, քան ցանկացած վիրուս։

Այս ամենը ցույց է տալիս, որ պատվաստումների հարցը միայն բժշկական ընտրություն չէ։ Դա պետական ռազմավարություն է, հանրային անվտանգության հիմնասյուն և ապագայի նկատմամբ պատասխանատվության ցուցիչ։ Պատվաստումների արգելքը կարող է թվալ ազատության դրսևորում, բայց իրականում այն կարող է վերածվել հասարակական վտանգի՝ ծանր և երկարատև հետևանքներով։
