Եյլի համալսարանի բժիշկ Կ. Բրենդոն Օգբունուի գլխավորած ուսումնասիրությունը բացահայտում է մակերեսների վրա վիրուսների գոյատևման վերաբերյալ կարևոր մանրամասներ՝ ցույց տալով, որ գործընթացը վճռորոշ կերպով կախված է մակերեսային նյութի և շրջակա միջավայրի ջերմաստիճանի համադրությունից։
Փորձերի համար օգտագործելով բակտերիոֆագեր՝ վիրուսներ, որոնք վարակում են մանրէները, գիտնականները բացահայտել են հիմնական օրինաչափությունները: Պղինձը պարզվել է, որ ամենաանբարենպաստ միջավայրն է բարձր ջերմաստիճաններում. պղնձե մակերեսի վրա 37 աստիճան Ցելսիուսի դեպքում վիրուսային մասնիկների կեսը կորցրել է ակտիվությունը 30 րոպեից էլ պակաս ժամանակում: Մյուս կողմից, ցածր ջերմաստիճանները զգալիորեն երկարացրել են վիրուսների կյանքի տևողությունը. չժանգոտվող պողպատի և պլաստիկի վրա 4 աստիճան Ցելսիուսի դեպքում դրանց ակտիվությունը պահպանվել է մի քանի ժամ: Սակայն բազմանալու ունակությունը չի հավասարվում գոյատևմանը:
Ուսումնասիրությունը բացահայտեց մի կարևոր մանրամասնություն. վիրուսը, որը պլաստիկի վրա ակտիվ էր մնում 37 աստիճան Ցելսիուսի դեպքում, կարող էր իր քանակը մեկ ժամվա ընթացքում ավելի քան 100 անգամ մեծացնել նոր տեր բջիջներում: Սա նշանակում է, որ մակերեսային դիմադրությունը և վարակիչությունը միշտ չէ, որ նույնն են:
Հետևաբար, միայն ժամանակի վրա հիմնված ավանդական մաքրման ուղեցույցները կարող են թերի լինել: Մակերեսների միջոցով վարակի փոխանցման ռիսկը տարբերվում է՝ կախված նյութերի և սենյակային ջերմաստիճանի կոնկրետ համադրությունից, որը պետք է հաշվի առնել հանրային տարածքների և հիվանդանոցների նախագծման ժամանակ:
Այս արդյունքները օգնում են բացատրել, թե ինչու են, օրինակ, կլինիկաներում պղնձե դռան բռնակները իրականում արդյունավետ, մինչդեռ սառը պահեստավորման տարածքները կամ սառնարանները կարող են լինել այն վայրերը, որտեղ վիրուսները կարող են պոտենցիալ պահպանվել ավելի երկար ժամանակահատվածում։
