Նոր ուսումնասիրությունը բացահայտել է նախկինում անհայտ մեխանիզմ, որի միջոցով միկրոպլաստիկները ազդում են շրջակա միջավայրի վրա. երկար ժամանակ արևի լույսի ներքո գտնվելու դեպքում (ֆոտոքայքայում), պլաստիկի մասնիկները ոչ միայն քայքայվում են ավելի փոքր բեկորների, այլև ակտիվորեն արտանետում են քիմիական հավելանյութերի և պոլիմերային քայքայման արգասիքների կոկտեյլ շրջակա ջրերի մեջ։
Այս «քիմիական ամպերը» ներառում են պլաստիկացնող նյութեր, կրակմարիչներ, կայունացուցիչներ և պոտենցիալ թունավոր օրգանական ենթամթերքներ: Գործընթացը քաղցրահամ ջրում զգալիորեն ավելի արագ է տեղի ունենում, քան ծովի ջրում, հավանաբար pH-ի և քիմիական կազմի տարբերությունների պատճառով:
Հայտնագործությունը ցույց է տալիս, որ միկրոպլաստիկների վտանգները տարածվում են օրգանիզմներում դրանց ֆիզիկական ներկայությունից այն կողմ։ Այս մասնիկները հանդես են գալիս որպես աղտոտման երկարատև աղբյուրներ՝ անընդհատ արտանետելով լուծված քիմիական նյութեր, որոնք կարող են ավելի կենսամատչելի լինել և վնասակար լինել ջրային էկոհամակարգերի և, ի վերջո, մարդկանց համար՝ սննդային շղթայի միջոցով։
Արդյունքները ընդգծում են պլաստիկ աղտոտման հետ կապված ռիսկերի վերագնահատման և այնպիսի ռազմավարությունների մշակման անհրաժեշտությունը, որոնք ոչ միայն կհեռացնեն մասնիկները, այլև կնվազեցնեն դրանց քիմիական ազդեցությունը։
