Աշխարհում գոյություն ունեն պետություններ, որոնք այսօր կանգնած են բառացիորեն գոյության կորստի շեմին։ Կլիմայական փոփոխությունները, ծովի մակարդակի բարձրացումը, բնական աղետներն ու տնտեսական ճգնաժամերը որոշ երկրներ հասցրել են այն վիճակին, երբ հարց է առաջանում՝ արդյոք դրանք կպահպանվեն աշխարհի քաղաքական քարտեզի վրա առաջիկա տասնամյակներում։
Առաջին հերթին վտանգված են փոքր կղզային պետությունները։ Օվկիանոսի մակարդակի անընդհատ բարձրացումը աստիճանաբար խլում է նրանց տարածքը։ Մասնագետների գնահատմամբ՝ եթե գործընթացը չկասեցվի, որոշ երկրներ կարող են ամբողջությամբ անցնել ջրի տակ։
Տուվալուն համարվում է ամենախոցելիներից մեկը։ Խաղաղ օվկիանոսում գտնվող այս փոքրիկ պետության առավելագույն բարձրությունը ծովի մակարդակից ընդամենը մի քանի մետր է։ Այստեղ արդեն այսօր բնակիչները ստիպված են լքել իրենց տները՝ աղի ջրի ներթափանցման և հողերի անպիտան դառնալու պատճառով։
Նման իրավիճակում է նաև Կիրիբատին։ Երկիրը բաղկացած է ցածրադիր ատոլներից, որոնք պարբերաբար ողողվում են ծովի ջրով։ Կիրիբատիի կառավարությունը նույնիսկ քննարկել է բնակչության մասսայական վերաբնակեցման հնարավորությունը այլ երկրներ։
Մալդիվները, որոնք շատերի համար զբոսաշրջային դրախտ են, նույնպես լուրջ վտանգի տակ են։ Մասնագետները զգուշացնում են, որ դարի վերջում այս պետության զգալի հատվածը կարող է անհետանալ, եթե գլոբալ ջերմացումը շարունակվի ներկայիս տեմպերով։
Վտանգված են ոչ միայն կղզային երկրները։ Հաիթին տարիներ շարունակ տուժում է երկրաշարժերից, ջրհեղեղներից, քաղաքական անկայունությունից և աղքատությունից։ Բնական ու սոցիալական աղետների համադրությունը լուրջ հարցականի տակ է դնում երկրի ապագան։
Աֆրիկայում անհետացման եզրին է հայտնվել Չադը, որտեղ անապատացման գործընթացը արագ տեմպերով ոչնչացնում է գյուղատնտեսությունը, իսկ ջրի պակասը խորացնում է հումանիտար ճգնաժամը։
Փորձագետները զգուշացնում են՝ եթե միջազգային հանրությունը չձեռնարկի համատեղ ու արդյունավետ քայլեր, առաջիկա տասնամյակներում աշխարհը կարող է ականատես լինել աննախադեպ երևույթի՝ ամբողջական պետությունների վերացմանը։ Սա միայն աշխարհագրական կորուստ չէ, այլ նաև մշակույթների, պատմության և միլիոնավոր մարդկանց ճակատագրերի կորստի վտանգ։
