Դամասկոսի Բաբ Շարքի քրիստոնեական թաղամասի տարածքում գտնվող Սուրբ Պողոսի եկեղեցու ճակատային մասից դեկտեմբերի 18-ին գողացվել է Պետրոս առաքյալի արձանը, տեղեկացրել է Hawar News-ը։
Ականատեսները հաստատել են, որ քրիստոնեական պատմության կարեւոր պահը պատկերող արձանը պոկվել եւ գողացվել է իր տեղից: Հանցագործների ինքնության եւ դրդապատճառների մասին տեղեկություններ դեռեւս չեն հրապարակվել։
Սիրիական անցումային կառավարությունը եւ եկեղեցին դեռեւս որեւէ պաշտոնական հայտարարություն չեն արել միջադեպի վերաբերյալ: Սոցցանցերում ակտիվիստները պնդել են, որ գողության դրդապատճառը քրիստոնեական խորհրդանիշները թիրախավորող կրոնական ծայրահեղականությունն է։
Ակտիվիստները նշել են, որ միջադեպը վերաբերում է հին քաղաքում քրիստոնեական ներկայությանը եւ ավելի լայն բանավեճ է առաջացնում պատմական եւ կրոնական վայրերի պաշտպանության վերաբերյալ։
Գողացված արձանը գտնվում էր Սուրբ Պողոս եկեղեցու առջեւ՝ հին քաղաքի արեւելյան դարպասի մոտ: Այն բրոնզե քանդակ է, որը պատկերում է Պողոս առաքյալին քրիստոնեություն ընդունելու պահին: Գործք Առաքելոցում (գլուխներ 9, 22 եւ 26) պարունակվող քրիստոնեական պատմության մեջ նշվում է, թե ինչպես է փարիսեցի եւ վաղ քրիստոնյաներին հալածող Տարսոնցի Սողոսը Դամասկոսի ճանապարհին հրաշագործ դարձից հետո դարձել մեծ միսիոներ՝ տարածելով քրիստոնեությունը հեթանոսների շրջանում եւ գրելով Նոր Կտակարանի զգալի մասը։ Եկեղեցին եւ արձանի շրջակայքը կապված են նաեւ Պողոս առաքյալի դամասկոսյան կյանքի, ավանդական պատմական վայրերի հետ։ Քրիստոնեական ավանդույթի համաձայն, որը հիմնված է Գործք Առաքելոցի վրա, ենթադրվում է, որ արեւելյան դարպասով (հայտնի է նաեւ որպես Սուրբ Պողոսի դարպաս) մուտքը Պողոս առաքյալի Դամասկոսից փախուստի վայրն է եղել։ Այնտեղ է, որ նրան գաղտնի կերպով զամբյուղի մեջ տարել են քաղաքից դուրս՝ փախչելու հրեա թշնամիներից, որոնք ցանկանում էին սպանել հավատափոխ Սողոսին։ Այս իրադարձությունը կարեւոր պահ էր նրա վաղ ծառայության եւ հետագա առաքելական ուղու մեջ։
