Գիտական համայնքը պարբերաբար կազմում է շաքարախտի կանխարգելման համար առավել օգտակար սննդամթերքների ցանկեր: Ավստրալիայի Ադելաիդայի համալսարանի և Չինաստանի Հարավարևելյան համալսարանի հետազոտողների կողմից անցկացված նոր ուսումնասիրությունը ցույց է տալիս , որ շաքարախտով հիվանդների համար օգտակար սննդամթերքների շարքում է նաև խմորման թեյը : Խմորման թեյի ամենահայտնի տեսակը չինական պուերն է : Այն պատրաստվում է մանրէային խմորման գործընթացով, որը փոխում է արտադրանքի համը և քիմիական կազմը:
Հետազոտությանը մասնակցել են Չինաստանի ութ նահանգների 20-ից 80 տարեկան գրեթե 2000 բնակիչներ, որոնց երկու երրորդը կանայք էին: Հետազոտությանը մասնակցել են ընդհանուր առմամբ 436 շաքարախտով տառապող, 352 նախադիաբետիկ և արյան մեջ գլյուկոզի նորմալ մակարդակ ունեցող 1135 մարդ:
Նշվում է, որ նրանց թվում էին թե՛ նրանք, ովքեր խմում էին տարբեր տեսակի թեյ, թե՛ նրանք, ովքեր նախընտրում էին միայն մեկը։ Հետազոտության մասնակիցներին հարցրել են թեյի օգտագործման հաճախականության և խմած թեյի տեսակի մասին, և հետագայում վերլուծվել է այս տվյալների և մեզի միջոցով գլյուկոզի արտազատման, ինսուլինային դիմադրության և գլիկեմիկ վիճակի միջև եղած կապը։
Գիտնականները պարզել են, որ թեյի ամենօրյա օգտագործումը անմիջականորեն կապված է մեզի միջոցով գլյուկոզի արտազատման ավելացման և արյան մեջ գլյուկոզի մակարդակի նվազման, ինսուլինային դիմադրության նվազման, ինչպես նաև նախադիաբետի առաջացման ռիսկի 15%-ով և 2-րդ տիպի շաքարախտի առաջացման ռիսկի 28%-ով նվազման հետ՝ համեմատած չխմողների հետ։
Հետ-ֆերմենտացված թեյը ամենադրական ազդեցությունն ունեցավ , քանի որ ուսումնասիրության մասնակիցները, ովքեր այն օգտագործել են, նախադիաբետի 53%-ով և շաքարախտի 43%-ով ցածր ռիսկ ունեին, քան նրանք, ովքեր ընդհանրապես թեյ չեն խմել։
