Այսօր Սպիտակի երկրաշարժի 37-րդ տարելիցն է

Սպիտակի ավերիչ երկրաշարժի 37-րդ տարելիցն է։
37 տարի առաջ՝ 1988 թվականի դեկտեմբերի 7-ին, տեղի է ունեցել Հայաստանի ժամանակակից պատմության ամենադաժան ողբերգություններից մեկը։
Հայաստանի ԽՍՀ հյուսիսային շրջաններն այդ օրը՝ ժամը 11։ 41-ին, ցնցվեցին ավերիչ երկրաշարժից, որը էպիկենտրոնի անունով կոչվեց Սպիտակի երկարաշարժ։
Երկրաշարժի էպիկենտրոնում՝ Սպիտակում, ցնցումների ուժգնությունը հասել է մինչև 9-10 բալ։
Երկրաշարժը խլել է ավելի քան 25 հազար մարդու կյանք։ Տասնյակ հազարավորները վիրավորվել են։ Հարյուր հազարավոր մարդիկ՝ մնացել անօթևան։
Երկրաշարժի հետևանքով շարքից դուրս է եկել Հայկական ԽՍՀ արդյունաբերական ներուժի շուրջ 40 %-ը։ Երկրաշարժի արդյունքում լիովին ավերվել են Սպիտակ քաղաքն և 58 գյուղ, մասամբ ավերվել են Լենինական (ներկայում՝ Գյումրի), Ստեփանավան, Կիրովական (ներկայում՝ Վանաձոր) քաղաքներն ու ավելի քան 300 բնակավայր։
Չնայած Սառը պատերազմի լարվածությանը, երկրաշարժից մի քանի օր հետո Խորհրդային Միության առաջնորդ Միխայիլ Գորբաչովը պաշտոնապես ԱՄՆ֊ից հումանիտար օգնություն է խնդրել (Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմից հետո առաջին անգամ)։ 113 երկիր զգալի քանակությամբ հումանիտար օգնություն է ուղարկել Խորհրդային Միություն՝ փրկարարական սարքավորումների, որոնողական խմբերի և բժշկական պարագաների տեսքով, բայց գաղտնի նվիրատվությունը և հասարակական կազմակերպությունների նվիրատվությունները նույնպես միջազգային օգնության մաս են կազմել։ Օգնություն բերելու ճանապարհին մեկ ԽՍՀՄ ինքնաթիռ, որում կային անձնակազմի 9 անդամ և 69 զինծառայող, և Հարավսլավիայից եկող մի փոխադրամիջոց կործանվել են տարբեր պատահարներում։
