Հայկական ազգանունները ոչ միայն ընտանեկան ժառանգություն են, այլև իրական պատմական փաստաթուղթ, որից հաճախ կարելի է հասկանալ՝ ովքեր են եղել մեր նախնիները, ինչով են զբաղվել և որտեղ են ապրել։ Հայկական ազգանունների մեծ մասը ավարտվում է «–յան» վերջավորությունով, որոնք նշանակում են «սերող», «ժառանգորդ» կամ «հետնորդ»․ օրինակ՝ Պետրոսյան, Հարությունյան, Ավագյան, Կարապետյան։ Այս ձևը ցույց է տալիս, որ ընտանիքի հիմնադիրի անունը փոխանցվել է սերունդներին որպես ինքնություն։

Շատ ազգանուններ պատմում են նախնիների արհեստների մասին։ Այդպիսիք են Մելքոնյան (մետաքսագործ), Ջուլհակյան (գորգագործ), Խալաջյան (գործվածքավաճառ), Քոչարյան (քոչվոր կամ արածեցնող), Քարապետյան/Քարհանյան (քարագործ), Նաճարյան (խուլագործ), Ոսկանյան (ոսկերչություն)։ Այս անունները վկայում են, որ ընտանիքի հիմնադիրը երբեմն ամբողջ համայնքում հայտնի է եղել իր արհեստով։

Հայկական ազգանունների մեծ մասը նաև տեղանվան հետ է կապված՝ պատմելով, թե որտեղից է եկել ընտանիքը․ Վանեցյան՝ Վանից, Զեյթունցյան՝ Զեյթունքից, Խարբերդյան՝ Խարբերդից, Երևանցյան՝ Երևանից, Կարինցյան՝ Կարինից, Ախալքալաքցյան՝ Ախալքալաքից։ Այս ազգանունները հատկապես կարևոր են գաղթած ընտանիքների պատմությունը հասկանալու համար։

Հայերի շրջանում լայնորեն տարածված են նաև կրոնական, աստվածաշնչյան կամ հոգևոր արմատներով ազգանուններ՝ Դավթյան, Սիմոնյան, Միքայելյան, Հակոբյան, Հովսեփյան, Գևորգյան։ Դրանք ցույց են տալիս քրիստոնեական ավանդույթի ազդեցությունը հայկական մշակույթի վրա։

Ու կան նաև ազգանուններ, որոնք կապ ունեն հին ազնվական տոհմերի հետ՝ Մամիկոնյան, Արծրունի, Բագրատունի, Գնունի։ Այս անունները հուշում են, որ տվյալ ընտանիքը կարող է կապված լինել միջնադարյան իշխանական ընտանիքների հետ և պահպանել են այդ հիշողությունը սերնդեսերունդ:

Հայկական ազգանունը պարզապես անվանում չէ, այլ մեր նախնիների կենսագրությունը։ Այն պատմում է նրանց զբաղմունքը, ծագումը, հավատքը և անգամ հասարակական դիրքը՝ պահպանելով անցյալի պատմությունը։
