Գիտնականները Երկրի մակերևույթի խորքում հայտնաբերել են հսկայական կառույցներ , որոնք այնքան մեծ են, որ Էվերեստը համեմատաբար փոքր է թվում, գրում էDaily Galaxy-ն ։

Nature ամսագրում հրապարակված նոր ուսումնասիրությունը բացահայտում է երկու հսկայական ստորգետնյա կառույցների գոյությունը։ Դրանք բարձրանում են 1000 կմ՝ գրեթե 100 անգամ ավելի բարձր, քան Էվերեստ լեռը, և գտնվում են Աֆրիկայի և Խաղաղ օվկիանոսի կենտրոնական մասում։

Նշվում է, որ սրանք դասական իմաստով լեռներ չեն, քանի որ դրանք կազմված չեն սովորական ապարներից, բայց մասշտաբի առումով դրանք Երկրի ներսում հայտնի ամենամեծ կառույցներն են։

Հոդվածում նշվում է, որ այս հայտնագործությունը ոչ միայն ամբողջությամբ վերաիմաստավորում է մոլորակի ներքին տեղագրությունը, այլև նոր գործիք է տրամադրում դրա էվոլյուցիան ուսումնասիրելու համար: Ենթադրվում է, որ այս խիտ շրջանները միլիարդավոր տարվա պատմություն ունեն՝ պահպանելով վաղ Երկրի քիմիական «ստորագրությունները» և ազդելով հրաբուխների ձևավորման, տեկտոնական գործընթացների վրա:

Ուտրեխտի համալսարանի գիտնականները այս եզրակացություններին հանգել են՝ օգտագործելով սեյսմիկ վերլուծության նոր մեթոդ։ Նրանք դիտարկել են ուժեղ երկրաշարժերից հետո Երկրի միջով անցնող տատանումները՝ հասկանալու համար, թե ինչպես է սեյսմիկ էներգիան թուլանում ավելի խորը շարժվելիս։

Այսպիսով, հետազոտողները Աֆրիկայի և Խաղաղ օվկիանոսի տակ հայտնաբերել են ցածր սղման ալիքի արագության և ցածր մարման տարածքներ: Նրանց կարծիքով, այս առանձնահատկությունների համադրությունը վկայում է հսկայական անոմալ տարածքների առկայության մասին, որոնք հայտնի են որպես ցածր սղման ալիքի արագության մարզեր (LLSVP):

Նրանցից յուրաքանչյուրը, ասում են, ձգվում է մինչև 5000 կմ լայնությամբ, և դրանց «բարձրությունը» այնքան հսկայական է, որ եթե դրանք տեղափոխվեին Երկրի մակերես, դրանք ամբողջությամբ կփոխեին «բարձր» բառի սահմանումը։
