Վաշինգտոն նահանգի առողջապահության դեպարտամենտը նոյեմբերի 14-ին հայտնել է, որ H5N5 վիրուսը հայտնաբերվել է Գրեյս Հարբոր շրջանի տարեց բնակչի մոտ, ով ունի ուղեկցող առողջական խնդիրներ և ներկայումս գտնվում է հիվանդանոցում: Իշխանությունները կարծում են, որ վարակը, հավանաբար, առաջացել է վայրի թռչունների հետ շփումից, չնայած հետաքննությունը շարունակվում է:
Թռչնի գրիպը առաջանում է գրիպի A վիրուսից և հիմնականում ազդում է թռչունների վրա: Հիվանդության բռնկումները տարածված են ֆերմերային թռչնաբուծության շրջանում և կարող են արագ տարածվել վայրի թռչունների միգրացիայի և մեծածավալ թռչնաբուծության պատճառով: Վիրուսը երբեմն փոխանցվում է կաթնասուններին, այդ թվում՝ մարդկանց:
2020 թվականից և 2024 թվականի թռչնագրիպի համավարակի ուժգնացումից ի վեր Միացյալ Նահանգներում մարդկանց մոտ հայտնաբերվել է 71 դեպք, որոնց մեծ մասը պայմանավորված է եղել H5N1 ենթատիպով և ունեցել են թեթև ընթացք։ H5N5- ի այս նոր դեպքը մարդկանց մոտ գրանցված առաջին դեպքն է։
H5N1 և H5N5 վիրուսների միջև տարբերությունը կայանում է վիրուսի մակերեսին գտնվող սպիտակուցի մեջ, որը կարող է ազդել վիրուլենտության վրա, սակայն ճշգրիտ ազդեցությունը անհայտ է: Մասնագետները կարծում են, որ H5N5 վիրուսը բնութագրերով նման է H5N1- ին և կենդանիների և մարդկանց մոտ առաջացնում է նմանատիպ ախտանիշներ:
