Հետաքրքիր է, որ գազավորված ջուրը մի ժամանակ գործնականում համարվում էր դեղամիջոց։ Ամեն ինչ սկսվեց 18-րդ դարում, երբ գիտնական Ջոզեֆ Փրեսլին հայտնաբերեց ածխաթթու գազը և հորինեց այն ջրի հետ խառնելու սարք։ Սկզբում գազավորված ջրերը վաճառվում էին դեղատներում՝ որպես բնական հանքային ջրերի այլընտրանք։ Ավելի ուշ գաղափար առաջացավ գազավորված ջրով նոսրացնել ոչ միշտ հաճելի համ ունեցող թուրմերը։

19-րդ դարի սկզբին ձեռնարկատեր Ջեյքոբ Շվեպպեն սկսեց օգտագործել սոդա՝ արտադրական ծախսերը կրճատելու համար: Ահա թե ինչու անգլիախոս երկրներում ըմպելիքը հաճախ անվանում են սոդայացված ջուր: 

Վերջին տարիներին գազավորված ըմպելիքները հաճախ ներկայացվում են որպես խիստ վտանգավոր պարենային ապրանք։ Սակայն մասնագետների գնահատմամբ՝ խնդիրը ոչ թե գազի, այլ դրանց բաղադրիչների չափավոր օգտագործման մեջ է։ Գազավորված ըմպելիքների վնասը հաճախ չափազանցվում է, մինչդեռ դրանց ազդեցությունը կախված է օգտագործման հաճախականությունից և ընդհանուր սննդային վարքագծից։

Սննդագետները հաստատում են, որ գազավորված լինելը ինքնին առողջական խնդիրներ չի առաջացնում։ Ծխախոտի կամ ալկոհոլի նման կախվածություն կամ ագրեսիվ ազդեցություն գազավորված ըմպելիքները չունեն։ Մեկ բաժակ ըմպելիքը առողջ մարդու օրգանիզմին լուրջ վնաս չի հասցնում, եթե դա չի դառնում օրական սովորություն։

Մասնագետներն ընդգծում են երեք հիմնական գործոն՝
1. Բարձր շաքարի պարունակություն։ 330 մլ շիշը կարող է պարունակել մինչև 35–40 գրամ շաքար։ Հաճախակի օգտագործման դեպքում սա ավելացնում է քաշի խնդիրների, ինսուլինային ռեզիստենտության և ատամների կարիեսի ռիսկը։
2. Թթվայնությունը։ Թթվային միջավայրը կարող է ազդել ատամների էմալի վրա, հատկապես անընդհատ օգտագործման դեպքում։
3. Քաղցրացուցիչներով տարբերակները։  Ըմպելիքները չունեն կալորիականություն, սակայն որոշ արհեստական քաղցրացուցիչները համարվում են վնասակար օրգանիզմի համար։

Բժիշկները համաձայն են մեկ հարցում․ գազավորված ըմպելիքները վտանգավոր են դառնում միայն այն ժամանակ, երբ դրանք դառնում են մշտական ու մեծաքանակ օգտագործվող սովորություն։ Երբեմն օգտագործելը, հատկապես հավասարակշռված սննդակարգի և ակտիվ կենսակերպի պայմաններում, լուրջ ռիսկեր չի ստեղծում։
