Կենսոլորտի կյանքի տևողությունը և Երկրի վրա էվոլյուցիայի տեմպը համեմատելով՝ հետազոտողները հանգել են այն եզրակացության, որ մեր քաղաքակրթության հետ միաժամանակ ի հայտ գալու համար առնվազն մեկ քաղաքակրթության տեսակը պետք է ապրի առնվազն 280 հազար տարի։ Տասը քաղաքակրթությունների միաժամանակ գոյության համար յուրաքանչյուրի միջին կյանքի տևողությունը պետք է գերազանցի 10 միլիոն տարին։

«Մեր գալակտիկայում այլմոլորակային քաղաքակրթությունների գոյության հավանականությունը շատ փոքր է և ուղղակիորեն կախված է նրանից, թե որքան ժամանակ կարող են դրանք գոյություն ունենալ», - բացատրեց Շերֆը։

Այնուամենայնիվ, ըստ նրա, որոնումները չպետք է դադարեցվեն. «Նույնիսկ եթե հնարավորությունները փոքր են, ճշմարտությունը պարզելու միակ միջոցը որոնումները շարունակելն է։ Եթե մենք ոչինչ չգտնենք, դա կհաստատի մեր հաշվարկները, իսկ եթե գտնենք, դա կլինի պատմության մեջ ամենամեծ գիտական ​​հայտնագործություններից մեկը»։
