Վիլյամ Սարոյանը կդառնար 117 տարեկան

1908 թվականի օգոստոսի 31-ին Կալիֆոռնիայի Ֆրեզնո քաղաքում ծնվեց ամերիկահայ մեծ գրող Վիլյամ Սարոյանը։ Նա աշխարհին հայտնի դարձավ իր պատմվածքներով, վիպակներով և պիեսներով, որոնց մեջ արտացոլված էին մարդը և կյանքի նկատմամբ սերը։
Սարոյանը համարվում է 20-րդ դարի ամերիկյան գրականության ամենաուշագրավ դեմքերից։ Նրա ստեղծագործություններում մշտապես զգացվում է հայի ինքնության, հայրենասիրության և մարդկային համընդհանուր արժեքների միաձուլումը։ Գրողի ամենահայտնի գործերից են «Խիզախ պատանին թռչող ճոճանակի վրա», «Մարդկային կատակերգություն» վիպակները, ինչպես նաև բազմաթիվ պատմվածքներ, որոնք թարգմանվել են տասնյակ լեզուներով։
1940 թվականին Սարոյանը պարգևատրվել է Պուլիցերյան մրցանակով, սակայն հրաժարվել է այն ընդունել՝ համարելով, որ արվեստը մրցակցության առարկա լինել չի կարող։ 1943-ին նրա «Մարդկային կատակերգություն» վիպակի հիման վրա նկարահանված ֆիլմը արժանացավ «Օսկար»-ի։
Սարոյանի մասին բարձր են արտահայտվել համաշխարհային գրականության ու մշակույթի բազմաթիվ դեմքեր։ Հենրի Միլլերը նրան անվանել է գրող, որը «սովորական կյանքից հրաշք կերտող», իսկ Կուրտ Վոնեգուտը ընդգծել է, որ Սարոյանը «մեզ հիշեցնում է՝ կյանքը պետք է ապրել անգամ ամենադժվար պահին»։
Վիլյամ Սարոյանը մահացել է 1981 թվականին, սակայն իր գրական ժառանգությամբ մնացել է հայ և համաշխարհային մշակույթի մեծություններից մեկը։
