Օգոստոսի 14-ին հունական ռադարները Էգեյան ծովի Քարդաք (հունական անվանումը` Իմիա) կղզու ափամերձ տարածքում փախստականների նավակի շարժ են նկատում: Միաժամանակ այդ տարածք են շարժվում թուրքական և հունական առափնյա անվտանգության ուժերը, որոնց միջև մոտ 6 ժամ տևողությամբ ուժի թեթևակի ցուցադրություն է տեղի ունենում և դրանցից ոչ մեկը չի ցանկանում ետ քաշվել: Անմիջապես այդ մասին զեկուցվում է հունական կառավարությանը: Հունաստանի ռազմածովային ուժերի հրամանատարությունն առաջարկում է կղզի ռազմանավ ուղարկել, ինչը մերժվում է վարչապետ Ցիպրասի կողմից: Փախստականների մի մասին ազատում են թուրքական, մնացածին էլ` հունական ստորաբաժանումները և միջադեպն ավարտվում առանց հետագա էսակալացիայի: 

1996 թ. Հունաստանն ու Թուրքիան նույն կղզու պատկանելության խնդրի պատճառով հայտնվել էին գրեթե պատերազմի շեմին: Այդ միջադեպը պատմության մեջ մնաց որպես «Քարդաքի ճգնաժամ»: 1990-ական թթ. կեսերին, Էգեյան ծովի տարածքային ջրերի հետ կապված, բավական սրվել էին երկու երկրների հարաբերությունները: Թուրքիան Հունաստանի կողմից Էգեյան ծովում իր տարածքային ջրերը մինչև 12 մղոն հեռավորության վրա տարածելու հայտարարությունը որակեց որպես «casus belli», և թուրքական խորհրդարանը կառավարությանն օժտեց ռազմական գործողություններ վարելու լիազորությամբ: Հարաբերությունները ծայրաստիճան սրվեցին հատկապես 1996 թ. Էգեյան ծովի Իմիա կղզու պատկանելության խնդրի ու նույն թվականին հունական կործանիչի կողմից Էգեյան ծովում խոցված թուրքական F-16 կործանիչի պատճառով: Երկու երկրների բանակներն էլ բերված էին մարտական պատրաստության և զգալի թվով ռազմական ուժեր էին ուղարկվել կղզու շրջակայք: Թուրքիայի ռազմածովային ուժերի հրամանատար Գ. Էրքայան հայտարարեց, որ Հունաստանի կողմից Էգեյան ծովում իր ջրային սահմանների հեռավորությունը 12 մղոն տարածելու պարագայում «Թուրքիան վճռականորեն կքննարկի թուրքական տարածքին մոտ որոշ հունական կղզիներ գրավելու մասին»: Վարչապետ Թանսու Չիլլերն էլ հայտարարում էր թուրքական բանակի վճռական գործողությունների մասին: Ճգնաժամը և կողմերի միջև հնարավոր պատերազմը կանխելու նպատակով գործի անցան ԱՄՆ-ն և ՆԱՏՕ-ն, որոնց միջնորդությամբ էլ այն հարթվեց:
