Նախահայրերը Հին Կտակարանի այն անձերն են, որոնց համար Հին Ուխտի Յոթանասնից թարգմանության մեջ գործածվում է «պատրիարք» բառը, որն օգտագործվում էր կրոնական և աշխարհիկ առաջնորդների համար: Նախահայր բառի համարժեքն է նահապետը: Աստվածաշունչ մատյանում ներկայացված է նահապետների երկու ցուցակ: Առաջինը (Ծննդ. 4:17-18) սկսվում է Կայենով` հասնելով մինչև Մաթուսաղա և Ղամեք, իսկ մյուսը (Ծննդ. 5:30-31) սկսվում է Սեթով և վերջանում կրկին Ղամեքով:
Քրիստոնեական եկեղեցին սրբերի շարքին է դասել նաև մարդկության նախահայր Ադամին՝ հաստատելով այն ճշմարտությունը, որ Քրիստոսի փրկչական արյունը թափվել է բոլոր ադամորդիների համար՝ սկսած նրանց նախահորից, և որ Ադամի փրկությամբ վերանում է ադամական անեծքը բոլոր նրանցից, ովքեր ապաշխարելով հավատում ու մկրտվում են՝ դառնալով Քրիստոսի եկեղեցու անդամ:Նախահայրերին կամ նահապետներին վերապահված էր շատ կարևոր դեր: Նրանցից շատերն ապրել են անգամ հարյուրավոր տարիներ, քանզի իրենց մտքում և հոգում ունեցել են աստվածայինին մերձենալու և աստվածահաճո կյանք վարելու ձգտումը:
Վայելելով ու զգալով Աստծո ներկայությունը՝ նրանք խրատում, զգուշացնում և ուսուցանում էին ժողովրդին՝ ետ պահելու խոտոր ճանապարհներից: Իրենց սրբակենցաղ կյանքով օրինակ են եղել մարդկանց համար: Նախահայրերի կենցաղավարության գերագույն նպատակն Աստծո ամենազոր կամքի իրագործումն էր: Լինելով բարեխոսներ Բարձրյալի մոտ՝ նրանք էլ ավելի անմիջական էին դարձնում Աստված-մարդ հարաբերությունը, որի կարիքը միշտ էլ զգացվում է: Սակայն առավել ևս այսօրվա ապրողների համար արժեքավոր ու ուսուցանող է նրանց՝ արդարությանը ձգտելու ու հասնելու սուրբ տենչը:
