Առաջին տպավորությունն այս վայրից՝ իդեալական պեյզաժ բնության ֆոնի ֆրա: Այս The Gap անունով վայրը հայտնի է Հարավային Նոր Ուելսում, որպես ինքնասպանների վայր: Ի ուրախություն շատ մարդկանց, ովքեր որոշել են իրենց կյանքին վերջ տալ, այստեղ՝ ճանապարհից այն կողմ ապրում է զարմանալի մի մարդ Դոն Ռիչի անունով:
Կես դարի ընթացքում նա շատ մարդկանց կյանքեր է փրկել, դրա շնորհիվ նրան նույնիսկ «ավստրալացի պահապան հրեշտակ» կոչումն են տվել: Նա փրկել է մոտ 400 մարդու կյանք: Նա հատուկ հնարքների չի դիմում, և ոչ մի անգամ ոստիկանությանն օգնության չի կանչել:
Ի՞նչ է նա անում, որպեսզի մարդկանց հետ կանգնեցնի այդ քայլից: Ոչ մի արտասովոր բան. Նա ուղղակի ջերմորեն ժպտում է նրանց և հրավիրում է իր տուն: «Չե՞ք ցանկանա գալ մեկ բաժակ թեյ խմելու», – ասում է նա մարդկանց, ովքեր աջակցության կարիք ունեն:
Կանգնել և նայել այդ վայրին, արդեն սովորություն է դարձել Դոնի համար: Երբ նա այդտեղ տեսնում է ինչ-որ տարօրինակ վարքով կամ կասկածելի մարդու՝ նա միանգամից անցնում է գործի:
Եվ չնայած չի հաջողվում փրկել բոլորին՝ ծերուկը ջանք չի խնայում, որպեսզի մահացողների քանակը որքան հնարավոր է քիչ լինի: Դիաննա Գեգգինսի աղջիկը՝ Դոնի փրկած մարդկանցից մեկն է: Ահա թե ինչ է ասում մայրը.
«Նա ուղղակի հրեշտակ է: Մարդկանց մեծամասնությունը ոչինչ էլ չէր անի, ուղղակի կշրջվեին և կգնային: Նա մեծ քաջություն, իմաստություն և հոգեկան ջերմություն ունի: Երջանկություն է, որ նման մարդ է ապրում այս աշխարհում»:
