Թուրքիայի նախագահ Ռեջեփ Թայիփ Էրդողանը Հաագայում ՆԱՏՕ-ի գագաթնաժողովից հետո տեղի ունեցած զրույցի ժամանակ հայտարարել է, որ Անկարան և Վաշինգտոնը նոր փուլ են սկսում երկկողմ հարաբերություններում՝ Դոնալդ Թրամփի՝ ԱՄՆ ղեկավարության վերադարձի ֆոնին։
«Իմ ընկեր Թրամփի հետ բացում ենք թուրք-ամերիկյան հարաբերությունների նոր դարաշրջանի դուռը։ Ես պետք է դա շատ հստակ ասեմ։ Երբ մենք զանգահարում ենք, մյուս կողմը 24 ժամվա ընթացքում անմիջապես հետ զանգահարում։ <...> Մենք փորձում ենք իրականացնել քայլեր, որոնք կնպաստեն մեր երկրների զարգացմանը», -լրագրողներին ասել է Էրդողանը։ ՆԱՏՕ-ի գագաթնաժողովի շրջանակում նա բանակցություններ է վարել Թրամփի հետ։
Ըստ նրա՝ հակառակ անցյալում ծագած տարաձայնությունների, Թուրքիայի և Միացյալ Նահանգների միջև հարաբերությունները միշտ ռազմավարական են եղել։ Էրդողանը շեշտել է, որ Թրամփի հետ կառուցողական երկխոսությունն օգնում է ընդհանուր դիրքորոշումներ գտնել նույնիսկ բարդ հարցերի շուրջ։
Հաագայում անցկացված գագաթնաժողովի ժամանակ Էրդողանն առանձին բանակցություններ է վարել ամերիկացի նախագահի հետ, որոնց ընթացքում կողմերը քննարկել են համագործակցության հիմնական ուղղությունները։
