Ալիսսան և Մայքլը կարծում էին, որ ճակատագրից իրենց մեծ պարգև է բաժին հասել և անհամբեր սպասում էին, թե երբ կարող էին իրենց փոքրիկ առողջ աղջիկներին տուն բերել: Նրանց գոյությունն արդեն ծնողների համար պարգև էր:
Ամեն ինչ լավ էր, երբ հերթական զննումներից մեկի ժամանակ բժիշկն ասաց, որ աղջիկներից մեկի որովայնը շատ ուժեղ այտուցվել է:
«Բժշկի դեմքը հանկարծակի փոխվեց, և մենք հասկացանք, որ ինչ-որ բան այն չէ: Ուլտրաձայնային հետազոտության արդյունքները ցույց տվեցին, որ Մադելի մոտ մանկական քաղցկեղի հազվագյուտ տեսակ է: Հետո ավելի վատ բան եղավ: Նույն ախտորոշումը տվեցին նաև Իզաբելին: Ոչ մի հույս չկար, որ նրանք ողջ կմնան», – հիշում է Մայքլը:
Ծնողները շարունակում էին աղոթել, միայն մեկ բան էին խնդրում՝ հրաշք: Բայց աղջիկների վիճակը գնալով վատանում էր: Նրանք արդեն քիմիաթերապիայի բուժման կուրս էին անցնում, երբ հանկարծ անհավանական մի բան տեղի ունեցավ: Սկզբում բժիշկները քույրիկներին իրար կողքի դրեցին, որպեսզի միասին հանգիստ քնեին:
Երկվորյակները կարծես ինչ-որ անտեսանելի մեխանիզմով փոխանակվեցին, ինչ-որ էներգիա փոխանցեցին միմյանց.
Առաջին անգամ նրանք սկսեցին ժպտալ, ծիծաղել և խաղալ: Հետո բժիշկները թույլ տվեցին բուժումը տանը շարունակել, իսկ որոշ ժամանակ անց, հետազոտության արդյունքները հիվանդության ոչ մի նշան ցույց չտվեցին:
«Աստված որոշեց բուժել նրանց», – սա այն ամենն է, ինչ կարող են ասել նրանց ծնողները:
