Մահից կարճ ժամանակ առաջ Հռոմի պապ Ֆրանցիսկոս I-ը իր ունեցած գրեթե ամբողջ գումարը՝ մոտ 200․000 եվրո (225․000 դոլար), ծախսել է Հռոմի անչափահասների բանտին կից գործող մակարոնի գործարանի հիփոթեքային վարկը մարելու համար, հաղորդում է The Economist-ը։
«Սակայն հանգուցյալ պապը նաև հավատքի մարմնացում էր, որտեղ տեղ կար կասկածի և անվստահության համար: Հավանաբար նրա ամենահայտնի մեկնաբանությունն այն էր, որ համասեռամոլության մասին հարցին պատասխանել էր. «Եթե մարդը համասեռամոլ է, փնտրում է Աստծուն և ունի բարի կամք, ո՞վ եմ ես, որ դատեմ նրան»: Նրա ժառանգությունը մեծ տեղ է թողել տարբեր մեկնությունների համար, մասնավորապես այն հարցում, թե արդյոք ամուսնալուծված և վերամուսնացած կաթոլիկները կարող են հաղորդություն ստանալ», - նշում է պարբերականը:
Ինչպես նշում է The Economist-ը, անորոշությունը զայրացրել է պահպանողականներին և այլոց, ովքեր փափագում էին Բենեդիկտոսից և նրա նախորդից՝ Սուրբ Հովհաննես Պողոս II-ից հստակ բարոյական առաջնորդություն ստանալ։

Բենեդիկտոս XVI-ի օրոք աստվածաբանական ուղղափառության պահապան կարդինալ Գերհարդ Լյուդվիգ Մյուլլերը դիվանագիտական զսպվածությամբ ասաց, որ Ֆրանցիսկոսը «որոշակի պահերի մի փոքր երկիմաստ էր», մինչդեռ իր նախորդի օրոք «կատարյալ աստվածաբանական պարզություն» էր տիրում։
