Համավարակների հետևանքները կարող են ավելի ծանր լինել մահերի և տնտեսական վնասի առումով, քան պատերազմների ազդեցությունը։ Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպության (ԱՀԿ) գլխավոր տնօրեն Թեդրոս Ադհանոմ Գեբրեյեսուսը համաշխարհային հանրությանը զգուշացրել է այս մասին՝ մտահոգություն հայտնելով զարգացող երկրներին առողջապահական ծրագրերի համար տրամադրվող օգնության կրճատումների վերաբերյալ։

Նա ելույթ է ունեցել «Մեծ քսանյակի» երկրների ֆինանսների նախարարների և կենտրոնական բանկերի կառավարիչների հանդիպման ժամանակ։ Ելույթի տեքստը հրապարակվել է ԱՀԿ մամուլի ծառայության կողմից։

«Համավարակը կարող է ավելի շատ մարդկանց սպանել և ավելի շատ տնտեսական խաթարումներ առաջացնել, քան պատերազմը», - ասել է Գեբրեյեսուսը։

«COVID-19 համավարակը խլել է մոտ 20 միլիոն մարդու կյանք և համաշխարհային տնտեսությունը զրկել ավելի քան 10 տրիլիոն դոլարից», - նշել է նա։ Ինչպես ընդգծել է ԱՀԿ գլխավոր տնօրենը, «առողջապահական անվտանգությունը տնտեսական անվտանգություն է», և երկուսն էլ «սպառնալիքի տակ են պաշտոնական զարգացման օգնության կտրուկ անկման և առևտրի խափանումների պատճառով, որոնք լրջորեն ազդում են առողջապահական ծառայությունների վրա շատ զարգացող երկրներում, մասնավորապես՝ Աֆրիկայում»։

ԱՀԿ-ն օգնում է երկրներին արագացնել «օգնությունից կախվածությունից դեպի ինքնաբավություն անցումը՝ արդյունավետության բարձրացման և ներքին ռեսուրսների մոբիլիզացման միջոցով, այդ թվում՝ ծխախոտի և ալկոհոլի հարկերի և հանրային առողջապահական ապահովագրության միջոցով»։ Գեբրեյեսուսը նշել է, որ շատ երկրներ «դեռ կարիք կունենան զարգացման բանկերից զգալի վարկերի՝ արտոնյալ տոկոսադրույքներով և ճիշտ պայմաններով»։
