Президент США Дональд Трамп в среду усилил свои притязания на Гренландию, заявив в преддверии визита вице-президента Джей Ди Вэнса, что США необходимо взять под контроль датский остров в целях «международной безопасности».

С момента прихода к власти в январе Трамп неоднократно настаивал на том, что он хочет, чтобы самоуправляемая территория находилась под контролем Вашингтона, отказываясь исключать применение силы для этого.

«Гренландия нужна нам для международной безопасности. Она нам нужна. Мы должны ее получить, - сказал Трамп в интервью подкастеру Винсу Колианезе. - Мне неприятно так говорить, но нам придется ее получить».

Как подчеркивает AFP, Гренландия, которая добивается независимости от Дании, обладает огромными нетронутыми запасами полезных ископаемых и нефти, хотя добыча нефти и урана запрещена.

Она также стратегически расположена между Северной Америкой и Европой в период растущего интереса США, Китая и России к Арктике, где из-за изменения климата открылись морские пути.

На вопрос, считает ли он, что гренландцы стремятся присоединиться к Соединенным Штатам, Трамп ответил, что не знает.

«Мы должны убедить их, - сказал он. - И нам нужна эта земля, потому что без нее невозможно должным образом защитить большую часть этой Земли, не только Соединенные Штаты».
