«Ձմեռային oլիմպիական խաղեր»-ը խոշորագույն միջազգային մարզական մրցաշար է, որն անցկացվում է Միջազգային օլիմպիական կոմիտեի նախաձեռնությամբ չորս տարին մեկ անգամ:

Ձմեռային խաղեր առաջին անգամ կազմակերպվեցին 1924 թվականին որպես Ամառային խաղերի կցորդ: 1924 թվականից մինչև 1992 թվականը Ձմեռային օլիմպիական խաղերը կազմակերպվում էին նույն տարեթվերին, ինչ Ամառային խաղերը, սակայն 1994 թվականից այս խաղերն սկսվեցին անցկացվել Ամառայինից 2 տարի տարբերությամբ:

1894 թվականի հունիսի 16-23-ին Սորբոնում (Ֆրանսիա) անցկացված կոնգրեսում որոշվեց, որ 1896 թվականին Աթենքում (Հունաստան) կանցկացվեն առաջին ժամանակակից Օլիմպիական խաղերը: Ենթադրվում էր, որ այդ խաղերի օրակարգում կներառվի նաև չմուշկասահքը, սակայն առաջին անգամ չմուշկները կիրառվեցին 1908 թվականին` Օլիմպիական երրորդ խաղերի ժամանակ (Սենտ-Լուիս, Միսսուրի, ԱՄՆ), երբ անցկացվեցին գեղասահքի մրցումները:

1911 թվականին ՄՕԿ-ի նիստում առաջարկվեց հաջորդ խաղերի ժամանակ (1912 թվական) անցկացնել «Ձմեռային մարզաձևերի շաբաթ»: 1912 թվականի V Օլիմպիական խաղերն ընդունող քաղաքը Ստոկհոլմն էր (Շվեդիա), որտեղ 1901 թվականից կազմակերպվում էին միջազգային ձմեռային մարզաձևերի մրցումներ` «Հյուսիսային Խաղեր»:

Մրցակցությունից խոսափելով` շվեդները հրաժարվեցին առաջարկից: Վերջապես 1924 թվականին Ֆրանսիական Շամոնի քաղաքում ՄՕԿ-ը կազմակերպեց Միջազգային մարզական շաբաթ` նվիրված VIII Օլիմպիական խաղերին: Միջոցառումը հաջողությամբ պսակվեց, իսկ շաբաթը վերանվանվեց Առաջին ձմեռային օլիմպիական խաղեր:
