Սպիտակ տունը պարզաբանել է, որ ՌԴ նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ զրուցել է ոչ թե ԱՄՆ նախագահ Դոնալդ Թրամփը, այլ ԱՄՆ հատուկ ներկայացուցիչ Սթիվ Ուիթքոֆը։ Այս մասին գրում է The Guardian-ը։
Շփոթմունքի պատճառ է դարձել սոցցանցում Թրամփի գրառումը, որում նա գովաբանում է Ռուսաստանի ղեկավարի հետ բանակցությունները և ասում. «Երեկ մենք շատ լավ և արդյունավետ բանակցություններ ունեցանք Ռուսաստանի նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ։ Հենց այս պահին հազարավոր ուկրաինացի զինծառայողներ ամբողջովին շրջապատված են ռուս զինվորականներով և գտնվում են շատ վատ և խոցելի վիճակում: Ես խնդրել եմ Պուտինին խնայել նրանց կյանքը», արդյունքում ստեղծվել էր տպավորություն, թե նա անձամբ է խոսել Պուտինի հետ։
Նրա խոսքից մյուս հատվածը, թե «հազարավոր ուկրաինացի զինվորներ Կուրսկի մարզում լիովին շրջափակված են ռուսական զորքերով», բուռն անհամաձայնություն է առաջացրել ուկրաինական աղբյուրների և ռազմական վերլուծաբանների շրջանում, որոնք այդ տեղեկությունը անվանել են ոչ ճշգրիտ:
