Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM) ամսագրում հրապարակված հետազոտությունը ցույց է տալիս, որ թոքերում եղած իմունային բջիջների հիմնական տեսակի ֆունկցիայի փոփոխությունները  ծխողներին և ծխախոտի ծուխը պասիվ շնչողներին ավելի ընկալունակ են դարձնում են շնչառական վարակներին և խորացնում են ծխելու հետ կապված բորբոքային հիվանդությունները, ինչպիսին թոքերի քրոնիկ օբստրուկտիվ հիվանդությունն է (ԹՔՕՀ):

Իրենց ուսումնասիրության ընթացքում գիտնականներն ուսումնասիրել են ծխախոտի ծխի ազդեցությունը լորձաթաղանթի հետ կապված անփոփոխ T բջիջների (MAIT) վրա՝ իմունային բջիջների մի տեսակ, որը հայտնաբերված է թոքերում և մարմնի այլ հյուսվածքներում: MAIT բջիջները օգնում են պայքարել բակտերիալ և վիրուսային վարակների դեմ և կարող են նպաստել հյուսվածքների բորբոքմանը կամ վերականգնմանը: MAIT բջիջները ակտիվանում են MR1 կոչվող սպիտակուցի ազդեցությամբ, որը գտնվում է մարմնի գրեթե բոլոր բջիջներում: MR1-ը ճանաչում է բակտերիաների կողմից արտադրվող քիմիական նյութերը և դրանք դուրս բերում վարակված բջիջների մակերես՝ ակտիվացնելու MAIT բջիջները և իմունային պատասխան սկսելու համար:

Գիտնականներն օգտագործել են համակարգչային մոդելավորում՝ կանխատեսելու համար, թե ծխախոտի ծխի որ բաղադրիչները կարող են ճանաչվել MR1-ով, և պարզել են, որ այդ մոլեկուլներից մի քանիսը ոչ միայն կապվում են սպիտակուցին, այլև ավելացնում կամ նվազեցնում են դրա քանակը բջիջների մակերեսին:

Այս քիմիական նյութերը, ներառյալ բենզալդեհիդի ածանցյալները, որոնք օգտագործվում են նաև որպես բուրավետ նյութեր ծխախոտի և էլեկտրոնային սիգարետների մեջ, արգելափակում են մարդու MAIT բջիջների ակտիվացումը բակտերիաների կողմից արտադրվող միացությունների միջոցով:

Հետազոտական ​​թիմն այնուհետև ուսումնասիրել է ծխախոտի ծխի ազդեցությունը MAIT բջիջների վրա մարդկանց և մկների արյան մեջ և պարզել, որ այն նվազեցնում է MAIT բջիջների գործառույթը: Ծխախոտի ծխի բազմիցս ենթարկված մկների մոտ առաջացել են թոքերի հիվանդության ախտանիշներ, որոնք խորացել են, եթե նրանք վարակված են եղել նաև գրիպով:

Գիտնականները պարզել են, որ ծխախոտի ծխի երկարատև ազդեցությունը փոխում է մկների MAIT բջիջների պաշտպանությունը, ինչի հետևանքով դրանք  գրիպի վարակների դեմ պայքարելու ավելի պակաս կարողություն են ունենում  և ավելի հակված են դառնում ԹՔՕՀ-ի զարգացմանը:
