Գիտնականները վախենում են աղետալի իրադարձությունից՝ կապված Երկրի շուրջ տիեզերական աղբի քանակի արագ աճի հետ: Վերջին 4 տարիների ընթացքում տիեզերքում արձակված օբյեկտների թիվը երկրաչափական աճ է գրանցել։ Սպառնում է այն իրավիճակը, որից գիտնականները միշտ վախենում էին։ Նրանց անհանգստացնում է, այսպես կոչված, Քեսլերի էֆֆեկտը՝ հիպոթետիկ գործընթաց, որը կարող է հանգեցնել արբանյակների համար մերձերկրյա տարածության լիակատար անհամապատասխանության: Համաձայն այս վարկածի՝ Երկրի ուղեծրում երկու տիեզերական օբյեկտների բախումը կառաջացնի բազմաթիվ բեկորներ։ Դրանք, իրենց հերթին, կհարվածեն այլ օբյեկտների և կստեղծեն դոմինոյի էֆեկտ: Ի վերջո, բեկորների ավելի ու ավելի շատ բեկորներ կլցնեն Երկրի մերձակայքը: Նման զարգացումը կարող է դադար տալ տիեզերքի ցանկացած հետազոտության վրա:
Ամենաշատը տիեզերքն աղտոտում է Չինաստանը: Աղբի մոտ 40 տոկոսը նրան է պատկանում, հետո ԱՄՆ-ին՝ 27.5 տոկոսով, երրորդ տեղում Ռուսաստանն է՝ 25.5 տոկոսով:
Մոտակա տիեզերքում բեկորների հետ կապված իրավիճակը ավելի քան լուրջ է։ Տիեզերական աղբի ծավալի (քանակի) գնահատականները տարբեր են: Բայց, ըստ ցանկացած հաշվարկի, խոսքը գնում է ավելի քան 30 հազար մեծ (10–20 սմ) բեկորների մասին, գրեթե մեկ միլիոն ավելի փոքր, բայց դեռևս շատ վտանգավոր բեկորների, որոնք մեծ են սանտիմետրից և 100 միլիոն փոքր բեկորներից որոնց չափը մեծ է մեկ միլիմետրից։ Եվ ուղեծրում այս աղբի «մառախուղը» վտանգավոր է դառնում տիեզերանավերի, այդ թվում՝ կառավարվող ուղեծրային կայանների համար՝ ինչպես գոյություն ունեցող, այնպես էլ ապագայում։
Տիեզերական աղբն ամենամեծ վտանգ ներկայացնում է գեոստացիոնար ուղեծրի համար Երկրից մոտ 35000 կմ հեռավորության վրա՝ հենց նրա շուրջ են պտտվում հեռահաղորդակցության արբանյակները: Մարդկությունը գեոստացիոնար ուղեծիրը մաքրելու արագ ճանապարհ չունի: Գիտնականների միջև լայն համաձայնություն կա, որ տիեզերական աղբը լուրջ խնդիր է, որը պահանջում է հատուկ ուշադրություն:
Որպես օրինակ` 2024 թվականի նոյեմբերին, ռուսական «Պրոգրես МС-28» բեռնատար նավը մեկ ամսվա ընթացքում երկու անգամ հեռացրել էր Միջազգային տիեզերական կայանը(ՄՏԿ) տիեզերական աղբի հետ բախումից։ Միևնույն ժամանակ, ըստ Ռոսկոսմոսի տեղեկատվության ՄՏԿ-ի ուղեծիրը հարկադրված կարգավորվում է տարեկան 16-20 անգամ՝ նման օբյեկտներից խուսափելու համար»:
