94 տարեկանում մահացել է ԱՄՆ նախագահի նախկին թեկնածուն

Ֆրեդ Հարիսը՝ Օկլահոմայից ԱՄՆ նախկին սենատորը և նախագահի պաշտոնի հավակնորդը, որը 1960-ականներին հանդես էր գալիս հանուն Դեմոկրատական կուսակցության բարեփոխումների, վախճանվել է շաբաթ օրը:
Նա 94 տարեկան էր։
Հարիսի կինը՝ Մարգարեթ Էլիսթոնը, Associated Press-ին հաստատել է նրա մահը։ Դեռևս հայտնի չէ, թե որտեղ է նա մահացել, սակայն նա 1976 թվականից ապրում էր Նյու Մեքսիկոյում և մահվան պահին Կորալեսի բնակիչ էր։
«Ֆրեդ Հարիսը խաղաղ վախճանվեց այսօր վաղ առավոտյան իր բնական մահով: 94 տարեկան էր։ Նա հիանալի և սիրված մարդ էր։ Նրա հիշատակը օրհնություն է»,- ասել է Էլիսթոնը:
Հարիսը ութ տարի ծառայել է Սենատում՝առաջին անգամ հաղթելով 1964 թվականին, իսկ 1976 թվականին առանց հաջողության հավակնել է ԱՄՆ նախագահի պաշտոնին։
Հարիսին, որպես Դեմոկրատական կուսակցության ազգային կոմիտեի նախագահի, 1969 և 1970 թվականներին բաժին է հասել օգնել բուժել կուսակցության վերքերը 1968 թվականի բուռն ազգային համագումարից հետո, երբ Չիկագոյում բախումներ տեղի ունեցան ցուցարարների և ոստիկանների միջև:
Նա փոփոխություններ է մտցրել կանոններում, որոնք հանգեցրեցին համագումարի պատվիրակների շարքում և ղեկավար պաշտոններում կանանց և փոքրամասնությունների ներկայացուցիչների թվի ավելացմանը:
