Картина Рене Магритта, изображающая устрашающе освещенный уличный пейзаж, была продана более чем за 121 миллион долларов на аукционе Christie's в Нью-Йорке во вторник, превысив предварительную оценку в 95 миллионов долларов и побив аукционный рекорд для работ художника-сюрреалиста, сообщает CNN.
Являясь одним из крупнейших полотен в серии из 27 работ, каждая из которых называется («Империя света»), полотно 1954 года хорошо известно среди искусствоведов 20-го века благодаря своим масштабам, первозданному состоянию и тонким деталям.
Аукционный дом назвал это произведение искусства «жемчужиной» коллекции его бывшего владельца, покойного американского дизайнера интерьеров Мики Эртегун, часть которой поступила в продажу во вторник.
На картине изображен дом с единственным уличным фонарем перед входом. Пламя фонаря освещает все полотно, включая темные деревья почти черного цвета на переднем плане, в то время как изображение безмятежно отражается в луже воды. Над уличным пейзажем до самого верха полотна простирается светло-голубое небо, усеянное пушистыми белыми облаками.
